There exists 100-years-old Jyurinkan-Warehouse located in Komagome. This house is a historical hybrid structure consisted from reinforced concrete foundations/walls and timber beams. Condition assessment of the building system was performed with minor/nondestructive manners from the viewpoints of condition of concrete, re-bars and fire damaged timber. The survey showed that the re-bars did not corrode in-spite of carbonation of concrete and timbers were under good condition. Also, the joint between RC wall and timber beam was clarified with X ray image analysis. Throughout of the researches, author proposed a perspective of effectiveness of minor/nondestructive test methods to assess the condition of historical buildings.

We investigated the species composition of structural timbers used in four traditional houses that were at least 100 years old in a rural village in the central Japanese snowbelt. Three or four species were used per house (five species in total). Beech, oak, and cedar, likely obtained from nearby forests, were used in all four houses. Beech, with a strong tolerance for bending forces, was used for beams and roof trusses, suggesting that there is a specific use of timbers according to woody species in heavy snowfall areas.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the current situation of a dwelling composition and actual use of dwelling of Toraja people in Sulawesi Indonesia. They are still keeping a roof shape of Tongkonan especially as their identity and a traditional habit for use of Tongkonan in their current dwelling. However, some Toraja people are not using Tongkonan as main living space. Most of their current main living space is on the ground level of dwelling which is built as an annex to Tongkonan or Banua. They give priority to convenience and economy on their current dwelling.

After release of Vietnam in 1954, Hanoi city, Vietnam of the capital, has changed boundary four times. The change has reflected upon the increasing demands of dramatic socio-economic policy transition, further has related to the urban structure. This study concentrates on analyzing Hanoi’s change of boundary and urban structure which has dealing with the situation socio-economic. In conclusion, Hanoi city performed with characteristics that conservation of agricultural land and compact urban.

An original outdoor lighting environment according to the concept of the “walking corridor” in Kaneyama Town was discussed. The landscape lighting which promotes walking without anxiety was proposed and carried out, having expressed characteristic landscape elements and maintaining the continuity of rows of houses. As a result, each landscape element became the landmark and photograph spot in people’s walking, and it enabled their safe walks and breaks. Furthermore, this activity stimulated the residents, and they started to attach lighting fixtures voluntarily. In the future, it is expected that the parks and the residential streets are to be connected seamlessly with lights by such lights being attached also to the surrounding houses.

This study focused on local governments original standard for permission of occupancy, café or event or so on, in privately owned public space to attract people in central city area. To clear that I reviewed local governments rule, obtained the information by means of questionnaire, interviewed to local government. As the results, it was found that as follows; the number of occupancy in POPS were on the increase because of high degree of freedom of activity in POPS with securing public realm, especially Yokohama city tried to make original standard with cooperating public and private, outreaching management body in POPS.

This paper aims to clarify characteristics of management form in lecture and event of the childcare facilities managed by community organization. In case of the facility reused wooden house, event is held in the base, lecture is held in community center because that has a cookhouse and lecture hall. A case that there are more than 30 staff members composed by community organizations related to child-rearing, it’s possible to ensure staffs from the management organization in both lecture and event. In the case less than 20 staff members, collaboration neighboring with specialized skills is enabled to hold variety lecture contents.

Prolongment of buildings’ life is important because many buildings are getting old, and most of them are hard to rebuild. It is also important to preserve buildings which tell us many historical things. Yasuda-hall, at University of Tokyo, built in 1925 and went through WW2, campus disturbances, East Japan Disasters, and so on. In this study, we unveil records of Yasuda-hall’s repair and renovation. In this paper, we show the history of Yasuda-hall and the summary of Yasuda-hall’s records of repair and renovation.

Yakyu Inari shrine was completion of framework in 1835, is often seen decoration architecture in northern Kanto. Architecture is Gongen-zukuri consisting of main hall, connecting chamber, worship hall, it was found that it was completed in a stepwise extension. With this research, the original roof foundation has been found that was Kokerabuki, was also found that which eaves has been applied in a method called special Hiwada zumi.

After the Meiji Restoration, many hydroelectric plants were made, and it accounted for 80% of the whole until high-growth period. In this study, we investigated 22 hydroelectric plants in the Chugoku region. As a result, the following findings were revealed. ①Plan: The area of generator room is big and high-ceilinged. ②Facade and Design: At several hydroelectric plants, we can see Western-style design such as full-centered arch window. ③Remodeling: Electric equipment had renewed, but base plan and facade is preserved. These hydroelectric plants are valuable sample for understand modern architecture in Sanin-district.

This paper clarifies historical value of the former library stacks in Utsunomiya University: masonry building built of Ooya-stone in 1924 and reinforced concrete building with Ooya-stone wall built in 1957. Through literature research and measurement investigation, it is clarified that they have historical value as construction and design features of local Ooya-stone and as components of campus landscape in Taisho-era.

Environmental basis of human existence is in danger and getting worse. In order to address urgently to this issue for human being’s survival and prosperity, the sensitivity toward the others produced by human activities, should be cultivated in design education. “Biodiversity-Friendly Architecture” is promising theme to be developed in the context of environmental education.
This paper reports 6 weeks-long graduate school workshop program which challenges by students to design and construct the architectural pieces for animals living in the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology. It aims to archive the assignment and the achievement of “Biodiversity-Friendly Architecture” workshop, and to clarify its educational effects and prospects.

Earthquakes in winter may cause much sever damage by snow especially in the heavy snow regions in Japan. We should learn many lessons from the past events. The 1927 Kita-tango earthquake is well known as a typical one occurred under the condition of heavy snow fall. Literature survey on newspapers at that time is performed. From collected newspaper articles related to the snow and low temperature are picked up and their bad effects to disaster response and recovery processes are discussed.

This research aimed at the Hisanohama town in Iwaki-shi, Fukushima which suffered serious damage from the earthquake disaster in 2011. The lighting social experiment which visualizes the geographical direction and spatial characteristics with lights was conducted. Based on the existing escape-route recognition investigation, lighting fixtures were attached to the hill, houses at junctions, open spaces, and cultural factors which are the landmarks of evacuation such as shrines. As a result of the experiment, more than 90% of residents answered that they could recognize the geographical direction by the lights also in nighttime. In every district with a possibility of suffering tsunami damage, it is considered that the lighting environment technique carried by this research is applicable.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and availability of the “Town of Memories Workshop” a method of preserving cultures including the scenery and the life style in disaster-stricken areas. This workshop divided into three stages: making the restoring models of the disaster-stricken areas, showing the models to the local citizens and conduct interviews on them about the areas before the disaster, adding to the gained information to the models. This study is based on the results of the workshop held in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture damaged by the tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake.
