The Geocapabilities project, initiated in Europe in 2013, has been developed in Asia by Shimura, Ito, and Miao. This poster focuses on curriculum making in Japan and China, using Lambert's curriculum making model. The model emphasizes the importance of teachers balancing student experiences, school geography, and teaching choice. In Japan, the model was used to study for revealing differences between teachers' commitment and their disciplinary foundations. In China, Xin Miao compared geography teachers' curriculum making diagrams with the Lambert model, revealing a difference between teachers who entered teaching before a Gaokao policy change and those who entered after. The Lambert-aligned teachers demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of curriculum making and more agency in curriculum making.

The Geographical Society of Japan establishes a disaster response headquarters in the event of a large-scale disaster, and is responsible for (1) responding to inquiries from various quarters, (2) exchanging information with other academic organizations, and (3) promoting geographic research. We have been disseminating information from a geographical perspective. Particularly in relation to ``General Geography'' in high schools, there is a need to disseminate accurate information. In order for the academic society to continue to improve its disaster response efforts in the future, it is necessary to proactively work towards motivating young researchers to actively engage in disaster research.

The purpose of this study is to consider theoretically the characteristics of urban renewal during the transition stage of urban change through a case study in Germany where the urban renewal projects have largely introduced. So that, I would like to argue whether the urban area has been changed through the medium- and long-term regional conditions (incl. physical, social and economic environment conditions) for urban renewal.

Ecomuseum is composed of territories, cores, satellites, and trails. Ecomuseum is an activity that treats the entire region as a museum and preserves and utilizes the region's natural and cultural heritage. It is important to get to know the territory while visiting the satellites. However, since the area is large, a mechanism for linking satellites is desired. The authors have made several attempts so far. As part of this efforts, we have devised a quiz-relay system. In this presentation, we will report on this and discuss the possibility of its development.

Indonesia is the world's eighth-largest producer of gold (in 2022). however, a portion of its gold production comes from ASGM. In ASGM, mercury has been used for the congregation of gold all over the world. Although the use of mercury has been regulated in Indonesia, it continues to be used after the Minamata Convention on Mercury came into effect in 2017. In addition to mercury, cyanide and borax are also used in ASGM in Indonesia. In this research project (KAKENHI No. 19H04334), we have studied the actual situation of ASGM in Sumbawa and Lombok islands in central Indonesia, and its effects on workers and the surrounding environment (Takahi et al., 2022; 2023). In this presentation, we report on the environmental impact of ASGM in Lombok, following the previous report (Hayashi et al., 2023).In June and July 2023, interviews were conducted with ASGM workers in southwestern Lombok Island. Also, to assess the environmental impacts of mercury or cyanide, the samples of (1) tailings and groundwater in the ASGM site (used for domestic and ASGM), (2) river water flowing near the ASGM sites, and (3) sand and shellfish from the beach adjacent to an ASGM site were collected and the concentrations of those components were analyzed. Water samples were collected from five locations in a river flowing through the distribution area of an ASGM site where both mercury and cyanide are used for gold recovery, and cyanide concentration was analyzed. As a result, 0.0004 mg/l of cyanide was detected in the uppermost point. This result suggests that cyanide discharged into the river is quickly diluted. However, since the survey was conducted in June which is the first half of the dry season (April to October), further investigation is needed to evaluate the actual situation during the latter half of the dry season (the season of the lowest river discharge). On the beach adjacent to the ASGM site, mercury content in the sand samples was below the detection limit, but approximately 0.2 to 1.0 mg/kg (n=6) of mercury was detected in the shellfish samples. Given that mercury has been detected in the tailings, wastewater, and domestic water (groundwater) at this ASGM site, the results suggest that mercury brought to the beach by direct discharge of wastewater and subsurface migration advected with groundwater flow is accumulated in the shellfish body. Since fisheries and tourism are conducted in the bay where this beach is located, it was considered necessary to conduct a wide-area study on the effects of mercury contamination on the bay ecosystem and the health of the local population.

Promoting the birth and development of startups is considered an essential strategy to revitalize the Japanese economy. The spatial concentration of startups is a core element of the "startup ecosystem," supporting this purpose. Various studies discuss how the specialization and diversity of business/service categories within these startup concentrations influence their success. This study examines the colocation of startups with various service categories, utilizing a modified colocation quotient (CLQ). This approach allows us to grasp the specialization and diversity properties of startup concentrations from a microscale perspective.

Disaster Response Committee of the Association of Japanese Geographers, established in 2001, engages in various activities through a geographical approach to disasters. Strengthening information sharing via websites and mailing lists is one of our initiatives. Consequently, for major disasters that have occurred in recent years in Japan, we have been able to swiftly provide information by creating emergency pages. However, there are numerous challenges. To implement better initiatives, the entire geographical society needs to establish improved systems with a longer-term perspective.

Introduction.
Voluntary migration in pursuit of an ideal lifestyle and for reasons other than economic factors is referred to as “lifestyle migration.” In recent years, there has been increasing research on migration between Japan and other countries. However, no research exists on return migration in which people return to their original place of residence after migrating to another place. Walsh (2022) suggests that this phenomenon has been overlooked in discussions on the return of lifestyle migrants. Therefore, this study focuses on the motives of lifestyle migrants for returning to their hometown. Hence, this study conducted a questionnaire survey of returnees to clarify the “image of lifestyle migrant returnees” based on their motives.

It's been nearly 20 years since Vancouver was hailed as the world's most livable city in the early 2000s. During this time, Vancouver has continued to serve as a model for a livable city, and its efforts have been used as a reference for many other cities. Up until now, authors have reported on many years of spatial development efforts aimed at making Vancouver a more livable city (e.g., Yamashita 2007). The accumulation of such efforts has led to the creation of urban areas that are sustainable and highly convenient for living, but on the other hand, the role of regional governments in wide-area coordination of the entire metropolitan area and formulating plans based on consensus building has been extremely important. Ikuta (1999) and Onojima (2010) discuss Canada's regional government, but they do not fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the current regional government in British Columbia (BC), where Vancouver is located. do not have. This report therefore clarifies the historical process of the establishment of Regional Districts, a unique regional government system in British Columbia, and its role.

In this study, we found that 1) riverine dunes were formed along the Nagara and Ibi Rivers, 2) these dunes were formed by sediments derived from the Nagara and Ibi Rivers, 3) Since the chemical composition of sediments varies with grain size, few elements are concentrated in fine-grained material in the Kiso River riverine dunes, which contain little or no mud, and 4) the Nakasu dune shows elemental compositions closer to the Neo River, which was caused by the change in the flow paths of the Ibi and Neo Rivers.

This presentation will look back the 50-years-history of the activities of the legendary geographer, Prof. Dr. Jiro KAWAKITA (Professor Emeritus, Tokyo Institute of Technology) and The Institute for Himalayan Conservation (IHC), which was established as his international cooperation sector, based on old photographs and video. The most distinctive feature of Kawakita-style action=research is that it juxtaposes “ethnology” and “community development” as actions that can be mutually verified, rather than as two sides of the same coin. The origins of Kawakita's praxis and IHC, born out with pure academic explorations, are worth reaffirming in today's turbulent academia which overemphasizes practical profits..

The purpose of this study is to compare k-12 curricula in Geography and Civics education in order to identify the current position and challenges of k-12 curriculum research in Geography education. In conclusion, Civics education has reached theorization and completed an k-12 curriculum of political education that combines practice and theory. In addition, since the researchers and many in-service teachers have completed the drafts of lesson practice together, it can be said that Civics education is ahead of Geography education in terms of k-12 curriculum research.

In 1929, 17 glaciers were identified on Mount Kenya. Later, the glacier inventory of 2004 reported the presence of only 10 glaciers, which were reduced to only 9 in 2016 as documented in the revised glacier inventory published in 2018. In this study, we confirm the existence of eight glaciers by comparing changes in the surface elevation of digital surface models (DSMs). The models are created based on Pleiades satellite images from February 17, 2016 and on digital images acquired from a Cessna aircraft on August 19, 2018. Although the revised glacier inventory of 2016 included Northey Glacier, we are not able to confirm any change in the surface elevation of this glacier. Therefore, it is likely that Northey Glacier could represent a seasonal snowpatch without an ice body. The comparison between the DSMs of 2016 and 2018 shows that the surface area of all eight glaciers had declined, indicating a negative mass balance. The average annual mass balance of the six glaciers is found to be −1.4 m w.e./a.
