    Focusing on men’s engagement in “care,” this paper reviews the current situation of men and the changes required of them to promote gender equality in Japanese society, and discusses how home economics education can contribute to this effort. Internationally, gender-equal policies encourage men to participate in domestic unpaid work and to foster their caring attitudes toward others and themselves, with “caring masculinity” as a key concept. However, Japanese men have low levels of participation in housework and childcare, and the conditions of their health and quality of life are unfavorable due to lack of self-care. This can be attributed to the working environment in which men are forced to work long hours as family breadwinners and to the fact that older men today have been systematically deprived of opportunities to learn home economics. Two challenges are suggested for home economics to contribute to the promotion of gender equality: one is to critically examine educational practices in schools from the perspective of the “hidden curriculum,” to eliminate irrelevant gender distinctions, to provide role models that help children erase gender stereotypes, and to provide interventions to dispel gender bias among children; another is to open up opportunities for people of all ages to learn the latest home economics as a lifelong learning activity.

    This paper analyzes materials contained in the archive of the journal “Kateika” published as a project to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Japan Association of Home Economics Teachers (ZKK), using the journal “Kateika Kyouiku”, Fumiyoshi Oshima’s old documents, and Tamako Sikanai’s old materials. Details of the establishment of ZKK have been clarified. From around March 1949, the “National Federation of Home Economics Leaders”, home economics leaders of elementary, junior high, high school, and university began to conduct research voluntarily, but when the Japan Society of Home Economics was established at the end of October 1949, elementary school teachers were unable to become members. And ZKK was established to create another organization. In November 1949, a petition for independence from the vocational subject of junior high school was found in the journal “Kateika” archive, which dealt with the problem of junior high school home economics in parallel with the problem of elementary school home economics. From January to March 1950, many petitions for preservation of home economics in elementary schools with the name of ZKK were submitted to the Ministry of Education. Before the establishment of ZKK, it was heavily involved in collecting petitions.

    This study aimed to clarify how culture of everyday life has been positioned in public education in home economics, the Course of Study, through analyzing their instruction manuals and commentaries. Apropos to this, we extracted descriptions of culture of everyday life from the Course of Study and instruction manuals or commentaries for elementary, middle, and high school home economics, published or announced between 1947 and 2018. The results of this study are as follows. 1) Three categories were generated through the analysis: traditional culture, lifestyle, and culture of everyday life category. 2) Since the publication of the Course of Study in 1947, descriptions of culture of everyday life have been extracted for each period. The position of the descriptions varied depending on the developmental stage of the learners and the content of study, mainly food, clothing, and housing. 3) Culture of everyday life in home economics education is a learning process that develops and deepens along with the developmental stage of the students as they “notice”, “understand appropriately”, and “understand the background and the value and inherit it proactively”.

    This study analyzes the educational theory contained in the second part of Solidarity, a pamphlet by the League of Nations, from the perspective of citizenship. It addresses coexistence and freedom to clarify the objectives and principles of education. Symbiosis with nature is a condition for human life; individual freedom is a condition for the progress of human society, and solidarity, as a practical obligation, is a condition for order. The objective of education is to foster the ability to understand the current status of these conditions and put them into practice. The principles of education stated in this study are as follows: Education based on the principle of natural symbiosis, which involves mutual obligations among individuals, families, and communities, to ensure that people have the right to freedom; Education based on the principle of quasi contract, which involves mutual obligations between individuals and the cooperative system, to ensure freedom and equality in the community, which enables people to have the spirit of solidarity; Education based on the principle of quasi social contract, which involves mutual obligations between individuals and society to allow individuals to contribute to society and work, which ensures that people have social rights ; Education based on the principle of quasi social contract, which involves mutual obligations among individuals, the state, and the international community, to equitably implement education, labor, taxation, and social welfare, which enables people to have suffrage. It is necessary to develop education and social conditions based on these principles to guarantee the human rights of all people. In Education for Sustainable Development in home economics education, it was considered essential to structure the learning objectives and contents so that individuals can think of justice in relation to family, community, society, country, and international society as their own rights and obligations, starting from the learning that families nurture lives.
