    This paper is prepared to support the special education classes that will start in the coming year. It seeks for an ideal support system for the teachers of home economics classes in primary schools, enabling them to practice substantial classes. For the method of study, the authors carried out a nationwide questionnaire survey with home economics class teachers to grasp the current conditions of home economics classes where pupils who are handicaped and those who are not handicaped study together (hereafter referred to as the home economics class of normalization). 1) Concerning difficult situations encountered in the home economics class of normalization, most of the questionnaire respondents pointed out that the difficulties are caused by the characteristics of handicapped pupils. 2) Many of the respondents requested support activities from educational administrative agencies for home economics classes of normalization. Such activities include the establishment of multiple instructors system, the setting up of study and training meetings, the supply of information that help teachers understand handicapped pupils, and the provision of methods for educating handicapped pupils. 3) The paper suggests a structure of a system that will assist teachers of the home economics classes of normalization, and proposes subjects to study for the promotion of home economics class of normalization.

    The purpose of this study was to survey the state of the implementation of classes concerning clothing life at a special education school for children with motor impairment, and to clarify the situation of learning. Research was conducted on 107 students, aged 6-18 years, who were registered at Tokyo Metropolitan School For the Physically Challenged in 2003. The research was conducted using questionnaires. We found that the learning on clothing life in schools for the physically challenged was centered around skills involving handicrafts and dyed goods, and that learning on body movements and practice for dressing and undressing was performed individually. Although most learning on the selection and purchase of clothes was not performed in classes at present, there were many teachers who saw a need for such studies. In order to raise the quality of the clothing lives of the students, many teachers thought it important for all students to choose clothes according to their own tastes, regardless of the seriousness of their physical challenge. It was suggested that there is a need for learning that helps develop the capability of students to determine their own style of clothing life.

    The recent spread of information devices has markedly affected people's lifestyle in Japan. In school education, approaches consistent with informationalization have also been used, and environmental improvements using hardware aspects such as computer equipment have been made. However, approaches from the soft aspects such as improvements in the instructional system with children/students in view have been few. In this Study I, we developed teaching material for lifestyle simulation using computers as a part of "studies on teaching materials in the housing field in school education". This study consists of the following parts. 1. Based on the "study sheet method" in Studies, teaching material using computers were developed, and its development process and contents were reported. 2. To use this teaching material in the field of education, pre-classes were given to subjects close to high school students, and points requiring attention for its use in the field were confirmed.

    We used our new teaching material using a computer for high school domestic science education/housing in the field and evaluated their effectiveness. Classes were given in national/private high schools in Kyoto with equipment that allows introduction of the developed teaching material. The usefulness of the teaching material was evaluated in terms of the following 3 items : (1) the degree of effectiveness of the teaching material in classes, (2) a questionnaire survey conducted after the use of the teaching material in the subjects, and (3) a survey of the degree of establishment of the contents of the class using the teaching material that was evaluated by a test after the class. The following results were obtained. 1. The teaching material was very effective, and a test after the class showed high retention. 2. Most students showed an interest in the teaching material though some were difficult to deal with. 3. Results 1 and 2 suggested a high level of understanding and establishment of educational contents in the students. Since its degree of variance was slight, this teaching material may have had beneficial educational effects on the subjects.

    The purpose of this study is to consider that how the perception of "weight control" as dietary decision-making should be taught in home economics by analyzing the data of "National Family Life Research", which the Japan Association of Home Economics Education conducted on elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school students in 2001. The rate of students who had perception of "weight control", especially that of female students, increased as the grade went up, while that of male students decreased. Only the rate of high school female students was over 50%. Further, male students who had perception of "weight control" had perception of all other items (being full, having little food additives, eating a lot of meat, vegetables and rice), while female students had perception of being full, and of eating a lot of vegetables. So, they have the wrong recognition that eating only vegetables is best if they want to be thin. The older female students are, the more likely they are to have perception of "wei ght control", based on the desire to be thin. It is necessary to make a distinction between controlling meals to prevent obesity and controlling them because of the excessive desire to be thin. Students were shown to have gender differences in their commonsense knowledge regarding diet for weight control. So, school knowledge of diet and nutrition does not prove to be useful. There are needs to be an investigation how school knowledge of diet can become students' commonsense knowledge.
