It is often the case today, that projects are composed of one or multiple procurement contracts for the goods and/or services required for the project. The successful completion of a project is heavily dependent upon the performance of such contracts. In order to select and effectively manage the performance of the contractors, project managers must be aware of the various contract types and be familiar with the characteristics of contract practices per each contract type. This paper introduces various types of procurement contracts, explains characteristics of each type and tries to provide some ideas for project managers for managing those contracts.

In terms of project management of software developments, cost control is well recognized as a crucial point in many cases. However, it is hard to say that conditions of contracts with business partners are recognized as a same priority as cost control. In fact, it is required to recognize that conditions of contract involve the cost deeply. This report clarifies risks of outsourcing and also explains the points which should be reflected on conditions of contracts for risk hedge.

Micro-IT[1] business becomes more complex in those activities of developing and manufacturing. The author is responsible for managing development and manufacturing of embedded system as a PDT leader in IBM. Ambiguous handlings of people assignment, job descriptions, scopes or process make wrong effects for every project. Contracts, which need both offering and approving, are effective method to avoid the ambiguousness. This paper describes the importance of contract management, which is showing a tendency to be ambiguous, from case study of author's projects.

Outsourcing Business belongs to a peculiar case in the definition of Project, because there is no fixed output pattern. There are only Services which is formless output pattern. Scope of Outsourcing is depends on the contents of Outsourcing contract. However all of scope of Services is not included in the contract. This paper discusses what is required in the Outsourcing Transition Management to start normal Outsourcing Business based on the experience of this project.

The captain of Apollo 13 sent the message "Houston, we have a problem" to the control center when the space ship had explosion accidentally on 10PM, 13th April 1970, the moment that the safe return project started. The location was 200 thousands miles away from the earth. By examining this project case, we try to understand a whole picture of quality management from a project perspective and from a perspective beyond the project perspective. Some ideas that the SEI's Capability Maturity Models provide are used to discuss what quality management means. Several unsolved issues on the quality management are described.
