Mitsubishi Electric Information Systems Corporation is promoting the process improvement for the purpose of managing the project as planned and providing high quality solutions with which customers are satisfied, and we have achieved maturity level 5 of CMMI in some business groups in March 2006. Now, we are promoting the process improvement for maturity level 4 and 5 in the whole enterprise. In this report, we present the practice of Earned Value Management, the pitfalls with this practice, and the methods to avoid these pitfalls.

It is required for a project's success to get transparency and high-visibility through the project life cycle. To share metrics of cost and performance in organization may have positive results such as early indications and prevention of problems. EVM (Earned Value Management) is drawing attention as a means for tracking schedule delays and cost excess of projects, and to share them. And it begins to be applied to the project management of the software development recently. Since there is a problem that originates in a contract types, a frequent schedule change and cooperation with an existing management system etc. on the site of the software development project, it is not easy to apply actually. This paper describes the problem caused and solutions when earned value is systematically applied to software development organizations.

The effectiveness of the progress management using EVM-Earned Value Management, no longer remains in the level of research or theory, and its recognition is increasing also in the practical area especially among project managers. Since EVM has a characteristic of converting every settlement of work to earned value, i.e. a project or a subsystem, there is a problem that it is difficult to grasp the actual condition of progress only with EVM in the operating process. Although correspondence of using other progress management techniques together as solution can be considered, it cannot be sufficient. In this paper, I will solve the mentioned issue above and propose a method of introducing the view point of critical path into EVM, for heightening the effect of progress management using EVM.

In a project applied Percentage of Completion (POC) based revenue recognition method in proportion to actual costs, the revenue of that project might not be recognized properly if the actual cost is far from the earned value. To avoid this issue, it is necessary to mange the cost properly and update the cost baseline at right time during the project execution. In this paper, it is considered that when the cost baseline should be updated, referring the EAC value calculated by using the EVM.

This paper proposes a human resource oriented management process at the system definition phase, which is recognized the most important phase for the successful system development project. The proposed management process controls the human resource allocation for the system definition based on the progress of the phase. The effectiveness of the proposed management process is examined using a simple example and a simulation model.

This paper proposes the updating method for project risk evaluation. The project has a time factor that changes situations of the project. Hence, the project team needs to do the project risk management continuously concerning about the time factor. Moreover, each risk has a correlation with the other risks. However, recent risk management has increased the task for project team to receive changing situation considering risk's correlation. Consequently, there are some cases that the project team takes an action after the happening. Therefore, this paper proposes the method using Bayesian network for updating project risk evaluation with its characteristics of probability propagation.

The time and effort required to correct a software defect that enter the product in its development phase increase as the detection of the defect gets delayed and becomes later in the process, causing the increase of development cost. Investigating the cause of the defect and the reasons for the delay of its detection will lead to finding improvements for the development process. We would like to present a method of process improvement which focuses on the analysis of those software defects that weren't timely detected.
