In a project to determine the spectral energy distribution of tungsten ribbon lamps, a black body graphite tube furnace has been used as a standard light source, distribution of which is already known.
The blackness of the furnace is of the great importance, because the accuracy of the determination depends upon it directly. Among the methods of calculating the quality of the black body furnace, it is considered that De Vos' method is the most desirable. Using his method and assuming linear temperature gradients along the side wall, the authors have calculated the quality of the grachite tube furnace for different a and S (shown in Table 2). From the table it will be seen that the quality of the black body furnace is not good enough for accurate determination. It is tound, however, that the blackness is improved to the practically sufficient value when the temperature of the furnace is measured using optical pyrometer. The result was endorsed by the experiments.
