In this paper, dimming of long are mercury lamps with constant wattage ballasts is described.
Dimming of mercury lamps is done by lamp current decreasing, but dimming ranges of lamp itself are determined by lamp loadings, and minimum lamp loading, for maintaining normal discharge, approxim ately 5W/cm.
With constant wattage ballast, which consists of leakage transformers and series capacitors, the lamp watts (lamp input) depend on series capacitors, but dimming ranges are restricted by combination of capa citors and leakage reactances with transformers, so minimum lamp input in these circuits is much above the lamp critical input generally, and other characteristics have shown good results. The dimming characteristics and ranges can be presumed from short characteristics (curved shape) of ballast.
Similar results have been obtained in the continual dimming on constant wattage circuits using a saturable reactor, parallel connected with a series capacitor.
