This paper relates to mathematical models for the discharge lamps such as high pressure mercury lamp. high pressure sodium lamp, metal halide lamp and fluorescent lamp. Particularly, instantaneous equivalent conductance models are used to facilitate analysing of the ballasting circuit.
The equation of ballasting circuit may be very complicated because of the nonlinear characteristics and the time variant nature of the lamp. Therefore it is hard to make a theoretical analysis and design of the ballasting circuit.
Postiulating continuity of the electron density in the lamp, the equivalent conductance is introduced in the rate equations. By using the method of finite differences for these equations, the rate equation can be expressed by the instantaneous equivalent conductance for each step time. Consequently, the ballasting circuit equation is given easily using this method, and the instantaneous lamp voltage and current can be calculated easily for each step time. Comparing the theoretical results with the experimental results for the discharge lamp operated with an inductance ballast, the usefulness of this method is discussed.
