A flow injection method was studied for the determination of ammonium ion in water.
A distilled water is pumped as a carrier stream (1ml/min), into which 100μl of sample solution is injected. 1.2% Sodium hydroxide solution and 4% ethylalcoholic solution of thymol are also pumped (1ml/min respectively), this allows the formation of indophenol type compound in the reaction coil (5m, 85°C) . The absorbance of the compound is measured at 676nm.
Linear calibration curve was obtained (r=0.9997), and the relative standard deviation with ten determinations of 5mg/l of ammonium ion was 0.62%. Routine sampling rate of 60 determi-nations per hour could be achieved with this method.
