For examining the effectiveness of titanium dioxide (TiO
2) on photocatalytic reaction in actual rivers or lakes, the possibility of algae growth control by using TiO
2 coated materials (tiles) was evaluated. The results of experiments showed that TiO
2 coated materials decrease algae growth. It also revealed that TiO
2 coated materials could be effectively used in a liquid phase. However, during long-term use of TiO
2 coated materials, the algae covered the TiO
2 coated materials, so the algae growth gradually increased. Therefore, using TiO
2 coated materials reduced the maintenance needed in amenity areas. A new device for the measurement of friction resistance was developed. By using this device, the variations of friction resistance during the growth of attached biofilm were investigated.
