This investigation focuses on the possibility of a new display device with low environmental load and high picture quality equal to that of a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). Environmental impact is reduced by use of general purpose glass (soda lime glass) and removing indium use, which has not yet been achieved by existing device. A prototype of original tiling CRT comprising multiple small CRT units has been fabricated to verify the concept. Due to the new tiling technique, a lowered anode voltage (necessary for the use of general purpose glass) as well as a thin, light-weight, large screen device has been simultaneously achieved. To make seams between units invisible, an original beam position and beam current sensing, feedback system has been introduced. In general, it is very difficult to maintain quality assurance while at the same time ensuring an environmentally conscious design, however, We think it is important, as a mid to long term research subject, to investigate new devices which can avoid a compromises between quality and environmental impact.
