The aim of this paper is to make clear a method of determining the geometric damping constant (
n) and the internal damping constant (α) incorporated in an equation to forecast railway vibration on surface lines, based on a definition of the theory of vibration transmission. An analysis is made of the damping tendency of the measured data pertaining to the vibration levels to be used in the analysis, followed by the selection of vibration level datum points. It is suggested that on the basis of the results of this, the damping constants be obtained by calculating backwards by the reiterative method, using the measured data. The paper also sets a relationship between the damping constants and geological features.
