    As regards operation of Mikkaichi Smelter, a report has already been made in the December, 1956 and February, 1958 editions of this bulletin. In this report, descriptions are given on the subsequent improvements attained such as on the method of roasting and sintering, recovery of copper gold and silver as well sa on the furnace plan of improvements including expansion of electric furnace, improvement in the grade of spelter, recovery of cadomium and recovery of zinc in the final residue.
    In addition to these, an introduction is also made on the production of zinc concentrate and on the history of zinc smelting of the Nippon Mining Co., Ltd.

    This paper is intended to show the construction, method of operation and results of experiments of the charging method by pneumatic charging apparatus using the soft dynamite which was designed originally by us.
    Though the hint of our investigation has been given by the report of “Drilling practic in Swedish mining” by lngvar Tanelid and the others, we began to investigate an idea that is entirely different from the Swedish type in order to establish more effective system of blasting.
    We continued the investigation through many safety experiments of the newly investigated soft dynamite as well as basic researches during the period of four years and now we have succeeded in arriving at one definite stage of our investigation.
    The peculiality of our method is the use of the paste-like dynamite not only realizing the most efficient loading density and increase of the blasting effect, but also economizing total mining cost. Though the stage of our research is not a perfect one, we will describe the results and progress of our research so far attained.

    The authers made an experiment about the relation between the ignition temperature and the friability of coals as expressed by the so called “Average particle size”.
    The results of this experiment are as follows:-
    1) When the coal is crushed by compressive load, the Rosin-Rammler's function is applicable to thedistribution of its products. Accordingly, we can calculate the “Average particle size” of the products.
    2) We can not recognize the fixed correlation between the ignition temperature and the friability of coals.
    3) Taking Joban coals as an example, the coals from different parts of the same coal-seam have not always a fixed correlation between the ignition temperature and the friability.

    The author produced by trial the cylindrical coal feeder with rotary pocket in order to simplify the construction and the operation and to increase the feed capacity of coal.
    As the results of experiment about the feeders (No.1-No.3) the following conclusions were obtained.
    (1) The feed capacity of coal was relative to the water content and the constituent of coal, and not to the flow velocity of water in the delivery pipe of pump.
    (2) The feed capacity of No.3 feeder was about 3.5 kg/min.
    (3) If this rotary feeder was used actually the capacity of pocket was given as follows, V=π/4D02·60Vw/(1+ε/k·ρ) Nm3 where D0=diameter of delivery pipe of pump m Vw=flow velocity in the above pipe m/sec ε=percentage of parcking of coal in pocket k=ratio of coal and water delivered ρ=specific density of coal N=revolution per minutees of the rotar
    (4) Using the above's studies the diagram in the design about the rotary feeder was obtained.

    The operation of a slime flotation in Tsuchihata Mill had been hindered by considerable quantities of soluble salts, mainly copper sulphate which amounts to about 0.16% Cu, contained in the crude ores, so that the extraction of copper had been very low.
    However, in 1955, we started the laboratory test of a new process, “Leach-Precipitation-Flotation Process” to improve the slime flotation our.
    Having got promising results we have put the process into a plant test, which showed nearly satisfactory results. Thus we have constructed the “L-P-F” plant in 1958.
    In this paper, the following problems are described;
    (1) Substitution of a copper ion using an iron powder as a precipitant.
    (2) Floatability of a cement copper.
    (3) Flotation test using a “L-P-F” process.
    (4) Recovering method of unreacted iron powder in flotation tailing.
    (5) Operation of the “L-P-F” plant.
    (6) Trends of the slime flotation results.

    The following conclusion was obtained by comparative studies on
    1) behaviors of natural air bubbles around flat-plates and curved-plates placed in water-flow channel,
    2) behaviors of ore-particles on the model impeller and of natural air bubbles and
    3) Wearing conditions of impeller employed at the field work in practice.
    (1) Behaviors of air bubbles in the water flow around flat and curved plates are different from those around columns in the point where air cavity is not formed in the wake due to displacement of separation point, but as to other conditions they can be inferred from those of columns.
    (2) Some of recomminution of air bubbles on the impeller, involving diffusing vanes of food plate, of F. W. type flotator are like those observed in the studies using columns, flat and curved-plates, and they are working effectively coexisting with other actions.
    (3) Wearing conditions are consequently helpful in acknowledging patterns of pulp-flow.
    (4) Flow of coarse and heavy ore-particles being deflected to the front side of blade in the impeller, flow of air bubbles is influenced by this variation of pulp density.

    The rate of reduction of ammoniacal cobalt sulfate solutions to metallic cobalt by hydrogen was studied over a hydrogen partial pressure range of 10 to 70kg/cm2and a temperature range of 150 to 225°C. Metallic cobalt was found to act as a catalyst, and linear rates of reduction were observed under the conditions where enough amount of cobalt powder was used. It was also revealed that the effects of ammonia and sulfate ion on the rate of reduction could be explained from the changes of hydrogen solubility. The rate of reduction is given by-d (Co)/dt=KSαPH2 exp (-7, 540/RT) where S is the effective surface area of cobalt powder, a the hydrogen solubility coefficient, and PH2 the partial pressure of hydrogen. A pcssible mechanism of the reduction process is suggested.
