Bethlehem property owned by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. is located in the Highland Valley areas of British Columbia, Canada.
The main orebodies, suggestive of porphyry copper deposits, consist of the East Jersey orebody and Jersey one.
Following the preparation of a feasibility study made in cooperation with Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., Sumitomo, in February, 1961, concluded an agreement with Bethlehem whereby Sumitomo provided the financlng of 5, 500, 000U.S.dollars to put the property into production.
The mill plant, with a rated capacity of 3, 300 short tons per day, was erected, in late 1962, and then mining commenced on the East Jersey zone as an open pit mining operation on December 1, 1962.
Ore reserves of the East Jersey pit was calculated at about 3, 300, 000 short tons at 1. 13% Cu after allowing for dilution.
The mining operation was done by a contractor, which provided the following main equipments on the work. 1-40R Rotary Drill, 2-4½cu. yd. Shovel, 4-Trucks 32 ST, 4-Trucks 27 ST.
During the period of March, 1963 through February, 1964, the ore was hauled at a rate of 4, 100 ST per day to the crusher, and the waste rock (including protore) was hauled at a rate of 11, 200 ST per day to the waste rock disposal area or to the protore stock pile area.
Stripping ratio waste/ore was 2.71.
In February, 1965, serious sloughing occurred on the wall, so that mining of the East Jersey was discontinued and mining equipments were moved to the Jersey pit, when all the ore in the East Jersey pit had been nearly mined out.
