The measurements of surface tension of the FeO-CaO-SiO
2 ternary slags with and without the addition of ZnO, Al
2O
3, Na
2O, P
2O
5 or CaS have been carried out at the temperature range from 1, 250°C to 1, 400°C by the modified “ring method”.
The changes in surface tension with the reduction of zinc contained in the slags by blowing CO gas onto the melts have also been investigated with the same apparatus.
The results obtained are summarized as follows: The surface tension increases with the increasing ZnO content. An addition of Al
2O
3 up to a few per cent seems to give little effect on the surface tension but the apparent increase has been observed in the region of the higher Al
2O
3 content.
Both Na
2O and P
2O
5 are found to be surface active in the ternary melt, while the effect of CaS is not clear.
