Samples used in this experiment were Nb
2O
5, Ta
2O
5 and (Nb·Ta)
2O
5 that were precipitated from aquous solution and calcined at different temperature.
For examining these samples in presence of carbon, the method fo continuous weigting in flowing chlorine was used, at continuously elevating temperature or constant temperature.
Experimental results obtained are as follows;
(1) On chlorination of Nb
2O
5 and Ta
2O
5, the higher the treating temperature of their oxides is, the higher the starting temperature of reaction becomes. In general, it seems to correspond considerably to their polymorphism.
(2) In the experimental range of Nb
2O
5-Ta
2O
5 system, the starting temperature of reaction is elevated continuously from Nb
2O
5 side to Ta
2O
5 side according to its composition.
(3) The rate of chlorination of the oxides may depend considerably on the temperature at which the oxides are prepared.
Apparent activation energy of chlorination in the, range of this experiment is described.
