The authors have studied on the selective chlorination roasting for the elimination of nickel from lateritic iron ores. Basic roasting condition for nickel removal was obtained by preliminary experiment and this result was applied to fluidizing bed roaster of laboratory scale.
The results obtained were as follows:
(1) Under the atomosphere of 15% Cl
2 and 85% O
2, and the roasting temperature of 1000°C, the elimination rate of nickel was higher than 90%, and iron loss was about 10%. The effect of particle size and the kind of ores on the nickel elimination could not be recognized.
(2) There was good coincidence between the result of nickel elimination and the thermodynamical consideration. However the result of iron showed on coincidence, and some amounts of iron were always eliminated in the above atmosphere.
(3) By the use of fluidized bed roaster, high nickel elimination rate of 95% was Obtained under the roasting atmosphere of Cl
2 in air. In this case, however, elimination rate of iron increased considerably by the dusting of fine are as compared. with preliminary experiment.
