The ζ-potential of quartz in distilled water varies widely with different experimentalists depending on their measuring methods. The streaming potential technique was performed on the -14-+65 mesh quartz samples, and the main conclusions obtained were as follows:
1) The ζ-potential of quartz in distilled water measured by the streaming potential technique did not differ according to the particle sizes and -43.6mV on the average. We could find no significant difference between the above mean value and-42.9mV which was obtained on the quartz sample of 1-5μ size fraction from the measurement of the cataphoretic velocity.
2) The ζ-pecific conductivity of the liquid between the quartz particles in the streaming cell increased with the fineness of the quartz samples. Therefore, it was considered the finer the particle size of quartz, the greater the surface conductivity of the quartz.
3) Considering the surface conductivity of quartz particles, it was found that in the calculation of the ζ-potential, λ
s must be taken as the specific conductivity of liquid between the sample particles.
