Simple screening method has been developed for qualitative analysis of chemicals in leachate samples by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) . The target compounds were 153 chemicals selected from the nominated compounds in the law of Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) System. After adding the target compounds to the three kinds of leachate samples, 3 sets of 100ml volumes were passed at a flow rate of 10ml/min through two cartridges of a Sep Pak OASIS-HLB (HLB) and Sep-Pak AC-2 (AC-2) connected in series. The analytes on the HLB cartridge were eluted with hexane (HLB-hexane) followed by methanol (HLB-MeOH), while those on the AC-2 cartridge were eluted with chloroform (AC-2-CHCL
3) . The results revealed 41, 83, and 23 chemicals present in the HLB-hexane, HLB-MeOH, and AC-2-CHCL
3fractions, respectively. The total number of chemicals was 84 since elution of similar chemicals occurred in the two fractions especially in the HLB-MeOH fraction. These results indicated that the chemicals collected on the HLB-MeOH were submitted to the qualitative analysis of the leachate samples at the 1 μg/l concentrations by using LC/MS.
