    Head-to-head droplets without coalescence can be realized if there exists a temperature gradient over the free surface of the droplets under the condition of the non-zero temperature coefficient of the surface tension. The present authors focus upon unique behavior of the particles suspended in droplets formed between the coaxial cylindrical rods with a temperature difference. Several kinds of patterns emerged in the hotter droplet will be introduced. Spatio-temporal particle behaviors are reconstructed by applying three dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (3-D PTV). This phenomenon is a potential way for the mixing in the liquid droplet without any mechanical components such as motors.

    The three-dimensional temperature measurement was carried out using the background schlieren method in combination with the tomographic image reconstruction technique. This technique allows a non-invasive optical measurement is applied to the temperature measurement around of a heating thin wire. The maximum temperature in the measurement agrees closely with that of the theoretical estimate and the thermocouple measurement.

    This paper describes a novel measurement technique for three dimensional shape of micro droplet utilizing micro LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. A measurement system consisted of microscope equipped with 10x lens, high sensitive CCD camera, CW Nd:YAG laser, optical filters and so on. Calibration curve between thickness of droplet and emission of fluorescence dye was carried out by the use of the PDMS microchip, whose depth varied from 8 to 120 μm. Measurement accuracy was about 2 μm assessed using laser displace meter. The technique is useful to investigate a two phase flow in micro scale.

    A liquid/liquid optical waveguides micro fluidic device, which comprised a liquid stream with a high index of refraction and a stream with low index, was developed in order to analyze phenomena at the interface of two liquid streams high sensitivity. The concentration distributions of molecule were measured using micro laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. The liquid/liquid optical waveguides micro fluidic device, made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fabricated using usual soft lithographic, consisted of one microchannel for core flow with 50 μm in width and two microchannels for cladding flow with 100 μm in width merge to one microchannel with 200 μm in width. The depth of all microchannels was 52 μm. A fluorescent dye which varied the concentration was introduced into the micro fluidic device to obtain a calibration curve of the relationship between fluorescence intensity and concentration.

    A unique micro flow meter for measuring small liquid flow rate is developed and presented in this paper. The measurement is based on counting of rotations of a micro impeller, 500μm in radius, installed in a micro PDMS channel in which the liquid to be measured flows. A stereolithography is used to fabricate the impeller and the casing. The characteristics and performance of the developed micro flow meter are examined. It is shown that there is a good linearity between the flow rate and the number of rotations counted in the range of 5000-25000μL/min. As expected, little additional pressure loss is generated by the installation of the present micro flow meter. Its dynamic response is evaluated to be about 0.2s, which is short enough to make measurement of unsteady flows.

    In order to evaluate the acceleration effect on liquid-liquid mixing reaction in microchannels, the distribution of product concentration is necessary to be visualized. Thus, in the present study, the technique to measure the distribution of product concentration is studied with the reaction of Fe 3+ (yellow) and SCN-(clear) produce auburn [Fe(SCN)2] +.The transmitted light through the solution is taken by CCD camera to derive the ratio of normalized blue intensity (B) and normalized red intensity (R) at each pixel. It is shown that the distribution of product concentration can be measured based on the correlation between the B/R ratio and the concentration.

    The hemolytic property of the blood pump has the relationship with high shear stress near the volute casing wall. Therefore, the shear stress distribution near the volute casing wall was quantified by PIV to evaluate the hemolytic property of the centrifugal blood pump for cardiopulmonary bypass. The velocity distribution was measured by PTV, then the shearing velocity distribution and Reynolds stress distribution to calculate the shear stress distribution. As a result, the shear stress near the casing wall and the hemolysis level increased as the pump rotational speed increased. Namely, the positive correlation between the shear stress measured by PIV and the hemolysis level of the blood pump was confirmed.

    In shear flows, vesicles like a red blood cell(RBC) change their shape in response to the local flow conditions. In the present work, a numerical simulation of vesicles in shear flows was conducted. The immersed-boundary method was used to simulate the deformation of vesicles. At first, the motion of a liposome in a simple shear flow was studied. In a simple shear flow, a liposome showed tank-treading motion. Our results were quantitatively in good agreement with the numerical results obtained by Kraus et al. and experimental results obtained by Hatakenaka et al. Then, numerical simulation of red blood cells in a cylindrical channel was conducted. In a cylindrical channel, red blood cells deformed their shapes to parachute-like shapes.

    This paper presents the experimental performance test results for the measuring technique of fibrous object orientation in 3D space based on digital holography. The technique consists of two steps: one is to detect the candidates of object position in 3D space with Sobel operator, and the other is to cluster them for each fibrous object with a self-organizing algorithm. Experiments are carried out using the observation system with an electronic camera and carbon fibers, in order to demonstrate the feasibility in real measurement of fibrous object orientation in 3D space. The experimental measurement results show that the error in depth angle and the standard deviation of detected position in depth are evaluated to be less than 7.9deg and 0.27mm, respectively.

    A new method of flow velocity measurement using pressure wave images in high-subsonic flow field is proposed and examined. The images of the pressure wave propagating against a main flow are used as tracers instead of ordinary particle images. Propagation speeds of the pressure wave visualized by an ordinary schlieren optical system are obtained by a same correlation method as a PIV, then, the flow velocity is deduced from the propagation speed under the assumption of the isentropic flow condition. As a basic validation, a computational flow field in a two dimensional duct is treated. The obtained flow velocities agree with the calculated values under the difference less than ±1% in a region without reflection waves. This shows the availability of the present velocity measurement method in the high-subsonic flow.

    A precise and reliable measurement on superposing particles in multi-phase flow using an image process method is eagerly needed. In our research, we propose a stereo image method compounded with a new voting method, in which, we combine a normal-line algorithm with the voting method for the separating and position fixing of particles. After a simulation valuating experiment on measurement precision, we present extensive experimental results on processing actual solid-liquid two-phase flow images using the present method and the result reveals that the presented method is effective and applicable for the detection of overlapping solid particles under a high void fraction condition than other methods.

    A method for measuring a density field around an airfoil in a transonic flow by using a focusing schlieren technique is proposed. The focusing schlieren images are analysed to get the light intensity distribution through a Gaussian filter to remove the optical noise. Then a density field is calculated. In the present study, the density ratio in a transonic flow over a NACA0012 airfoil was calculated at y/c=0.236 above the airfoil. The step function scaling factor, β of 0, 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1, and the number of discrete steps used to model spread function, N of 3, 5 and 7 are tried to get density distribution. As β became large, density ratio became low. Similarly, as N became large, density ratio became low. This result indicates some feasibility of quantitative measurement with the focusing schlieren technique. However, a farther study should be performed to validate the present result.

    New method and means are proposed to measure the skin friction force on an aerodynamic surface based on elastic deformations of silicon rubber and gel coatings. Object is coated by elastic polymeric film with known shear modulus. The displacement of coating is calculated from the correlation of two images between wind-on and wind-off. We conduct the theoretical analysis for the elastic polymer film and propose the material properties of the coatings required to measure the surface skin friction in the wide range of flow speed. There are two ways to calibrate the skin friction force to the displacement of coatings. These methods are tested and compared to quantitative skin friction force measurement. The skin friction over the plate is measured using this technique in various Reynolds number. The hot wire measurement is conducted to validate this technique. The time averaged measurements of this technique are in good agreement with the traditional results. However, the unsteady characteristics of surface skin friction are not captured by the lack of time resolution of the CCD camera.

    A rotating flow accompanying free surface shows aperiodic switching between an axisymmetric surface shape and a nonaxisymmetric surface shape at a certain Reynolds number. This study aims to clarify a relation between the surface shape switching and flow transition. Ultrasonic velocity profiling was utilized to measure instantaneous velocity profile of the rotating flow. Variation of the turbulent intensity with respect to Reynolds number shows a flow transition at the same Reynolds number for the switching. The variation also shows a change of a tendency which expresses flow instability occurring at a smaller Reynolds number.

    We attempted to measure the velocity distribution of thermal plume by means of ultrasonic velocity profiling, UVP. To investigate a behavior of the plume at velocity field, both of the visualization and UVP measurement was done in transparent liquids, water and glycerol solution. Ascending velocity of the plume obtained by each method showed good agreement each other. Spatio-temporal velocity distribution measured by UVP further showed the periodic separation of the thermal boundary layer, which is difficult to be observed by the visualization. The velocity distribution of the plume appearing in liquid gallium was also measured by UVP and applicability of the measurement system on the thermal plume measurement was confirmed.

    Recently, biomedical diagnosis using Near-Infrared light has been highly improved, which is based on the inverse analysis. In this study, the computed tomography of Laser-induced Near-Infrared fluorescence images was investigated experimentally. In this system, two excitation lights and a CCD detector are symmetrically located at the same side to object. Fluorescence emitted from the bio-phantom embedded in ICG fluorophors were captured by CCD with rotating around an object. Reconstructed images were applied to convolution back-projection processing and deconvolution processing with a point spread function. As a result, it was easier to identify the fluorophors, suppressing light scattering degradation by the deconvolution. Therefore, proposed system was suggested to be useful for bio-optical diagnosis.

    Groynes have been used for stabilization of banks and creating navigation channel by confining cross section, especially for large European and Japanese rivers. Therefore, studies on 2D shallow flows and transport phenomena in groyne field have paid attention to the proper environment for ecosystem and suitable design for bank protection and obtainment of enough depth of main channel.
    Typical Japan-river characteristics are large variation of discharge due to big amount of rainfalls so that the groynes are affected by the instantaneous and coherent flows with high energy. Therefore, present study focuses the effects of instantaneous and coherent flow structures around a single groyne by means of a technique of shallow flow visualization and particle tracking velocimetry applied for the large velocity differences. In addition, the advection of coherent structures around the groyne are analyzed and discussed by means of POD decomposition and conditional sampling method.

    In the case of oil spill accident on the ocean, it is very important to proceed the appropriate recovery work for the minimization of environmental damage. We have developed a new airborne remote sensing tool for the detection and monitoring of oil spill to support the oil spill prevention.
    This system illuminates the UV pulsed laser from the helicopter to the sea surface, and observes the 2-dimentional images of fluorescence from oil film floating on the sea surface. Because this method is active remote sensing, it is considered to be effective for the oil spill visualization in the night time, or in the foul weather condition.
    The discrimination test was succeeded in the helicopter experiments of light fuel oil and sea water. Additionally, the detection test of underwater fluorescent substances was also succeeded in the indoor basin experiment.

    In these days, Microwave radars are used for observing maritime traffic. On the other hand, we have not enough infrastructures to watch the traffic especially at the coastal sea and the Ocean area. Therefore we try to make new method of finding vessels in the maritime area. We have already suggested a technique of classification by their colors in our last report. Vessels have not only deck colors but also their own shapes and upper structures. We focus on them to classify their ship type in this report. As the first step, we make new visual processing tool for analyzing the vessel's upper structures and their shapes. Our tool can show the elements of the shape using Hough Transform. In this paper, we show characteristics of the Hough Transform results using this tool.
