The author treated 34 cases of infected root canal with ammoniated Silver Oxide (AS) Iontophoresis. In order to prevent from the electrolysis of medicament in a root canal the non-polarisable electrode devised by Prof. Suzuki was used in all experiments instead of the conventional metal wire's electrode and consequently the more intensified effect of this therapy was obtained.
Three per cent ammoniated Silver Oxide solution was used as an electlyt.
Then the author obtained the following clinical results :
(1) It need 1.1 times of treatment on the average with AS iontophoresis to secure the complete sterile state of these infected root canals, for there were 26 cases completely cured by only a single treatment and 4 cases by twice.
(2) The total amount of current necessary to secure negative culture was 29 mA' in case of single root teeth and 32 mA' in multirooted teeth. Therefore average amount of current was 30 mA'.
(3) After the first treatment slight irritations upon periodontia were seen in 5 of 30 cases but this disorders disappeared in 1 to 2 days. In spite of the rapid sterilization of root canal, AS iontophoresis had a little irritation upon periodontia. In the smear specimens, the degeneration of neutral leucocytes in the exudation of canal kept abreast with the clinical symptoms, and the favorable clinical progress could be noticed.
(4) From the results obtained in (1) and (3) it has been confirmed that the iontophoresis was superior to any other topical root canal treatments.
