As a guide to the solution of various problems concerning the emission spectrochemical quantitative analysis of iron and steel, a somewhat fundamental study is made by the use of a low voltage condenser discharge on the relation of the spectral line intensity of iron to the peak discharge current, average discharge current, discharge energy and excitation temperature under various excitation conditions. The spectral line intensity and the discharge energy are mutually related, both cecoming minimum at the critically damped discharge. The excitation temperature is observed to fall generally when the moving electrode method is used.

Spectrochemical analysis of slag with a direct reading spectrometer (Direct Reader by Baird Atomic Inc., J.S.A. was used) is adequately accurate by the use of the briquetting method of analyzing by spark discharge the briquette made of the sample and graphite powder. But the working curve for slag is of no avail for other oxide materials of very different composition such as bricks, clay, cement, iron ore and iron sand, for the intensity of central line of grating spectrum used as the internal standard varies with the kind and concentration of base component of the sample. In analyzing powdered oxide materials in general, the kind and concentration of the base component can be made equalized to all the samples by the addition of some pure oxide compound. By comparison tests of various pure oxides, the addition of molybdenum trioxide is found to give working curves for the briquetting method of analysis common to several oxide materials.

The influence of sodium on emission intensity of potassium is investigated by the use of Perkin-Elmer type air-acetylene flame. By Saha's equation, partial pressures of alkali elements in flame are calculated from the degree of curvature of working curves, and from these values, the degree of ionization and the concentration of neutral atoms of sodium and of potassium in flame are calculated.
By combining the equilibrium constant of ionization reaction of sodium and that of potassium, partial pressures of neutral atoms in coexisting condition are obtained. On the assumption that the spectral line intensity is proportional to the concentration of neutral atoms, increased values of potassium are calculated from the above values, and these theoretical values are close to the experimental values except in high concentration range of sodium.
