A study is made concerning the spectra of some elements in steel observed by the discharge in various atmospheres which are composed of oxygen, nitrogen and argon.
The obtained results are summarized as follows:
    (1) The spectral-line intensity is not affected by the total pressure of atmosphere but by the partial pressure of oxygen or nitrogen.
In other words, as it is related to oxidation of metals and also mutually related to excitation of molecular spectra, the spectra of elements are restrained by appearance of oxides and CN molecules.
    (2) On the discharge in nitrogen atmosphere below 760 mmHg, it is found that the stability of discharge column is most excellent at about 200 mmHg.

The relations of electrode erosion rate to spectral intensity, atmospheric and discharge conditions are examined by low voltage spark discharge with copper electrodes.
The cathode erosion rate depends mostly on the atmospheric condition. As the concentration of nitrogen or oxygen admixed in argon increases, suppression of the cathode erosion becomes observable at 3% nitrogen concentration or 0.1% oxygen concentration. The erosion rate, 1.34 μg/spark in argon, falls down to 0.63 pg/spark in nitrogen and to 0.08 μg/spark in a mixture of argon with 3.5% oxygen. If the atmospheric condition is kept the same, the cathode erosion rates have a linear relation with the integrated discharge currents, which is the same as the result obtained previously with spark in argon atmosphere.
Spectral line intensity depends mainly on the cathode erosion rate except for the case of high oxygen concentration. The intensity ratios between ionic and atomic lines depend on the discharge current form, but not on the atmospheric condition. The mechanism of cathode erosion by spark in argon atmosphere is discussed after Libin's theory. On the other hand, the suppression of the cathode erosion in an active gas is found explainable by a chemical reaction on the electrode.
