    In order to improve a signal-to-noise ratio for a single photoelectron counting system, the discriminator method is usually used.Experimental comparison between this method and a pulse height analyser method was performed with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio. The pulse height analyser (P.H.A.) method was found to have a better signal-to-noise ratio than the discriminator method.When a photomultiplier (P.1VI.) was cooled and the temperature dependence of its dark pulses was deviated from Richardson's law, this effect became remarkable.At room temperature, however, this effect was not found, and.these two methods had similar signal-to-noise ratio.It is supposed that dark pulses of P.M. caused by multi-electron-events as well as pulses originated at the dynodes can be removed by the use of the P.H.A.method.Therefore, for the detection of the very low level light flux where a cooled P.M.have to be used, this system will be preferably utilized.Although this work is carried out with only one EMI 6255 B tube, the measured result does not seem to differ appreciably from those for other photomultipliers.

    This work presents the influence of heating an electrode on the spark phenomenon. Pure Fe, Cu.Co, Ni, Cr, Al, Zn and Sn electrodes are heated to 700°C and changes of spectral lines intensity, the amount of erosion and spark column temperature are studied.The influence of electrode temperature on the amount of erosion depends upon the element's affinity for oxygen.The erosion rate of the electrode, made of an element which is not easily oxygenized, is accelerated according to it's temperature.But the erosion rate of the electrode, made of an element which is easily oxygenized, is decelerated acconding to it's temperature because of it's oxide film.The erosion rate of Cu electrode, which is the most difficult to be oxygenized, depends upon it's temperature in accordance with the formula M=C/θ-T approximately (C: constant number, θ: melting point, T: electrode temperature). On the other hand, we can't find a rule about the influence of electrode temperature on spark column temperature.But we find that irregularities arise from the change of the status of electrode surface or electrode matrix.

    There are two special points of this plasma jet light source as follows.A cathode rod is put horizontally into plasma jet to settle the cathode spot on the rod, and a space of an extremely high temperature comes out in the discharging hole in consequence of a thermal pinch effect.
    Plasma jet flame formed at the upper part is not high temperature but about 3500-5000°K, and the spectral pattern is rather simple, then a small spectrometer can be used.
    Solution samples are nebulized by nitrogen gas of 2.5kg/cm2 and 2.51/min.Then this nitrogen gas composes cyanogen, and emits CN bands in the flame.The emission of the CN bands seems to play an important part in the emission of the spectral lines.It is very effective to introduce argon gas of 1 atm and 2-3 1/min, and dilute the CN gas with the argon gas in order to observe spectral lines under a better condition.

    A plasma jet excitation source was developed for the spectrochemical analysis of solid metal samples.
    Influences of the electrode shape, gases, direct current and additional materials on the intensity-time curves were studied by using a pure iron and a few kinds of steels as samples. Based on the results, the best conditions for determinations of manganese and silicon in carbon steels and of cerium and tungsten in alloy steels were decided respectively.The analytical precision of manganese in a carbon steel was 7.66 percent.
    It was observed that the vaporization rate of alloying elements had a relation with the vapor pressure of the elements at high temperatures.The plasma jet flame showed rather lower temperature, approximately 5000°K, compared with the usual arc or spark discharge. Accordingly, this method has such advantages as that the spectrum pattern is simple and the background is relatively low, since spectral lines with high excitation potentials are scarecely excited.
