To improve the sensitivity of laser microprobe analyser, a calculation procedure based on curve fitting method is described, which consists of several corrections for self-absorption of spectral lines by using a simple source model. Using this method, the experimentally observed spectral line profiles are converted to spectral lines for no absorption to obtain calibration curves. The results show that linear calibration curves with large slopes are obtained for the analysis of copper in aluminium, but the slopes are still less than unity. The cause for this discrepancy is studied. After correcting the residual half-width at zero copper concentration, the slopes become unity. This means that the line intensity is propotional to copper concentration. By this method, we can determine metal concentration even from the spectral lines with self-absorption. This method is therefore useful for improving the analysis precision of the laser microprobe analyser.
