Applicability of the Grimm lamp to the analysis of steel was investigated. In the analysis of tool steel, high speed steel, stainless steel and carbon steel, a single working curve which is common to all kinds of steels was obtained for each of Si, Mn, Cr and Al, while the working curves of P, S and C depend on the kind of steels. When a correction of the intensity ratio,
IMo/
IFe or
Iw/
IFe, was made for the concentration of W or Co, a single working curve was obtained for Mo or W, respectively. Irrespective of soluble or insoluble Al, it is possible to determine the total amount of Al in carbon steel with the single working curve obtained by using a Grimm lamp with a 4.5 mm i. d. anode tube discharged at 1300 V DC through 800 Pa (6 Torr) Ar. The detection limits of elements obtained by using the Grimm lamp were equivalent or inferior to those obtained by the spark discharge.
