A basic research is carried out to evaluate the analysis precision of laser microprobe analysis in terms of the fluctuation of laser output energy and contamination of the auxiliary sparking electrodes.
The influence of fluctuation of the laser energy on the analysis precision is studied, monitoring simultaniously the laser energy along with the spectral line intensity without auxiliary spark excitation. The fluctuation of the laser energy is very small compared with that of the spectral line intensity and no correlation is found between them. It is concluded from this that the fluctuation of the laser energy has no effect on the analysis precision.
The effect of contamination of electrodes for auxiliary sparking on the analysis precision is investigated and a cleaning procedure of the electrodes by a discharge is proposed to minimize the effect. The experiments show that the reproducibility of the analysis result is improved about two times and the linear range of the calibration curve is extended. This method is therefore useful to improve the analysis precision.
