Many interesting excitation phenomena are known to be observable in Quantovac and Vacuum Quantrecorder analysis of steel in argon atmosphere. For example, despite the cathode jet being there, no anode jet is seen when the discharge is of unidirectional, critically damped (e.g.10 μF, 50 μH, 3 Ω, 900 V) or overdamped (e.g.10 μF, 50 μH, 20 Ω, 900 V) type.A study is made on this phenomenon concerning the profiles of spectral lines, the change of counter electrode weight and the kind of counter electrode material.
When the discharge was of the type mentioned above, an Ag counter electrode was found increased in weight owing to the evaporation of cathode material and the Ag line 1803.23Å failed to be observed. With the oscillatory discharge, however, the matter was very different.
With the unidirectional discharge, not only Ag but Cu, Zn etc.as the counter electrode material gave equally satisfactory results in spectrochemical analysis of steel in argon atmosphere.
