The ddY mouse-derived El strain is a mutant susceptible to severe epileptic convulsion. Using a method of aggregation of embryos from the F1 progenies of ddY♀ × El ♂ and ddY♀ × C57BL/6J♂, seven chimera mice were produced. These seven chimera mice manifested distribution of white coat color derived from F1 progeny of ddY × El, in two 100%, one 50%, two 24%, and two less than 4% and the frequency of the seizure occurrence were 71.4%, 50%, 28.6%, 28.6%, 21.4%, 0.7% and 0%, respectively. It was found that the chimera mouse which had a larger percent of white coat color had higher susceptibility to epileptic convulsion, the susceptibility having been proportional to the degree of the tissue mosaicism.

The estimation of breakthrough time for multicomponent organic solvent vapors on activated carbon fixed beds is significantly complicated and difficult. This paper describes a simple estimation method of breakthrough time for the first component (foremost breakthrough component) in two- or three-component organic solvent vapors on an activated carbon fixed bed. The breakthrough time for the first component was expressed by the harmonic mean value of the breakthrough times in each pure component. Estimated breakthrough times were compared with the experimental ones.

In the present paper, a method is described for the determination of nitroarene, (nitrated poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) in pollutants. Organic compounds in diesel engine soot samples were extracted with 10 ml ethanol and 40 ml benzene for 10 minutes by using a ultrasonic apparatus. The aromatic nitro compounds extracted were redissolved in methanol and converted to aromatic amines by using hydrochloric acid and zinc powder for 15 minutes. The reduced aromatic amines were extracted with benzene, and the extract was completely evaporated under nitrogen gas and then the residue was redissolved in cyclohexane. The reduced fraction in cyclohexane was chromatographed on a silica gel column and divided into two portions. The aromatic amino compounds were contained in the second fraction, which was eluted with benzene and was completely evaporated under nitrogen gas. On the other hand, the residue was redissolved in acetonitrile. The aromatic amino compounds in acetonitrile were separated and determined by means of high performance liquid chromatograph equipped with a UV and fluorescence detectors. In diesel engine soot samples, 1-nitropyrene, 9-nitroanthracene, and 1-nitrofluorene were detected. 1-nitropyrene could be determined and its content was 59-1020 ng/g. By this method, 1-nitropyrene in pollutants could be analyzed easily.

Crude extracts obtained by water extraction from the muscle of an ascidian (Halocynthia rotezi) are shown to possess an inhibitory activity on ATPase [(Na, K) ATPase, TF1-ATPase, HMM-ATPase]. Gel filtration of the extract with Sephadex G-10 separated the activity into two peaks, and the latter peak (inhibitor Ⅱ) was further purified by HPLC. This inhibitor was non-competitive for ATP and associated firmly with the (Na, K) ATPase.

The clinical significance of serum ribonuclease (RNase) assay in acute leukemia was studied. Serum RNases were assayed by the method of Akagi et al. with slight modifications in the serum samples obtained from 50 cases of healthy subjects, 55 cases of acute leukemia before therapy, 18 chronic myelocytic leukemia before therapy, 13 chronic myelocytic leukemia under treatment and 20 reactive leukocytosis. The ratio of acid RNase to alkaline RNase activities (Ac/Al ratio) was statistically increased in acute promyelocytic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia [M2], acute myelomonocytic leukemia and erythroleukemia (leukemic stage) compared with those in healthy subjects (P < 0.001). All cases of acute promyelocytic leukemia and most of the acute myeloblastic leukemia [M2], acute myelomonocytic leukemia and erythroleukemia cases had an Ac/AI ratio of above 1.0. In remission of acute leukemia, it is noteworthy that acid and alkaline activities showed no substantial difference from those of healthy subjects. While, on relapse of acute leukemia cases, showing Ac/AI ratio above 1.0 in pretreatment state, Ac/AI ratio increased to above 1.0. Thus, the assay of serum RNases and the calculation of Ac/AI ratio might be an additional method for diagnosing acute leukemia and for asessing their remission and reccurence in some types of acute leukemia.

A retrospective study was performed on 230 patients with Herpes zoster. Among these patients, 156 patients (67.8%) were over 50 years old. Ninety-four percent of the patients who received the nerve block therapy within a month from the onset became ultimately free from pain while only seventy-nine percent of the patients upon whom this therapy was started after 2 months or more were relieved of pain. It was suggested that the earlier the therapy and the younger the patients, the more easily herpetic pain could be controlled. In conclusion, it became apparent that early treatment of Herpes zoster with nerve block therapy, is extremely important for prevention of post-herpetic neuralgia.

A 2-month-old, well developed, healthy boy, weighing 5.55 kg, was fed 200 ml of bottle-milk containing 65 ml of sake. So-called kanzamashi (sake boiled in the evening and remaining in a bottle overnight, ) was mistaken for yuzamashi (water boiled and left to cool), and used to prepare a 15% formula milk. About 10 minutes later, the baby became flushed, began to breath hard, and lose consciousness, and an alcoholic odor was noticed. He was brought to our clinic, where gastric lavage and parenteral fluid therapy were started. On admission, his main physical signs were, whole body had become red, unconsciousness, alcoholic odor, tachycardia and tachypnea, without low body temperature, while his remarked laboratory findings were metabolic acidosis, hyperglycemia, and high A/G ratio. Moreover, a transient proteinuria, alternately followed by a transient glycosuria, appeared within the course. About 10 hours later, he showed an obvious improvement in both physical and laboratory findings. As an explanation of these changes in his condition due to alcohol ingestion, we speculated that a metabolic acidosis with hyperglycemia caused the disturbed reabsorption in his renal tubulus, which revealed alternating proteinuria and glycosuria.

Bacteriological examinations of faecal samples, obtained from 321 infants and children with acute enteritis, were carried out in the pediatric clinic of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan from January 1983 to December 1985. Campylobacter jejuni were isolated in 48 infants and children (15%), while Salmonella species in 6 (1.9%), and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in 11 (3.4%). Of 48 infants and children with Campylobacter enteritis (C. enteritis), 20 cases (42%) were under 2 years old, 17 (35%) from 2 to 6 years old, 8 (17%) from 7 to 12 years old, and 3 (6%) above 13 years old, suggesting the higher incidence in the younger infants and children. There were 30 males and 18 females, male : female ratio of 5 : 3. No seasonal variations in the frequency of C. enteritis were noticed. Major symptoms were diarrhea (94%), fever (50%), bleeding in stools (44%), abdominal pain (31%), and vomiting (10%). All strains of C. jejuni were highly sensitive to gentamicin, amikacin, kanamycin, erythromycin, josamycin, and chloramphenicol. We also report two typically mild cases of C. enteritis, a newborn infant with monosymptomatic bleeding in stools and diarrhea, and another 11-month-old, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome infant with asymptomatic bloody stools.
