The redback spider, Latrodectus hasseltii, is a common venomous spider in Australia. This species had not been recorded in Japan until late 1995. Large numbers of redback spiders were collected in Osaka City and in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, in November 1995. Another species of widow spiders, namely, the brown widow spider L. geometricus, was also collected in various ports : Yokohama, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and in Okinawa. The author has reviewed current available information on widow spiders including the life cycle, reproduction, hunting behavior, systematics and distribution of each species, etc. The invasion route of these species into Japan is also discussed. The invasion of redback spiders into Japan apparently dates back several years as frequently old, empty egg sacs have been found. There is no information on how the redback spiders survived the winter season in Japan. Fortunately, so far in Japan no biting cases have been reported.

Community structure and ecological distribution of flies (Diptera, Cyclorrhapha) attracted to putrid flesh traps in the urban and suburban areas in Tokyo were studied from January 1990 to November 1992. Trapping sites were classified into eight types, and 179 species of flies belonging to twenty four families were collected. The trapping site similarities were clustered by Pianka's α index. Composition rate of 47 dominant species in each trapping site was analyzed.

Larval polytene chromosome banding patterns of Simulium (Simulium) eximium de Meijere, 1913 collected from West Java and Sumatra in Indonesia were observed and a standard map was presented. This species had three chromosome pairs which were numbered I-III in decreasing order of size. Each centromere of all chromosomes was distinguished by an expanded region with heterochromatin. A haplotype involving two distinctive heterochromatic bands in the centromere (21A) and section 20B of the chromosome I was heterozygous in most of the males from the population of Puncak (West Java) and appeared to be sex-linked. The differences in chromosomal polymorphism, coupled with those in sex-related banding, suggest that two sibling species exist in the S. (S.) eximium morphospecies, one in Puncak (West Java) and the other in Danau Ranau (South Sumatra).

Seventy one species of eleven genera of the mosquitoes from Sri Lanka are recorded. Of them, Culex hutchinsoni, Culex perplexus, Culex scanloni and Uranotaenia novobscura, are newly recorded from Sri Lanka. The larvae of Topomyia sp., which seem to be new to science, were also collected for the first time from Sri Lanka.

The wingbeat frequencies of two black fly species, Simulium bidentatum and S. iwatense were measured after emergence. The mean frequencies of both sexes of S. bidentatum were about 200Hz within 24hr after emergence and rose to 245-250Hz after then. On the other hand, the mean frequencies of male and female of S. iwatense were about 200 and 180Hz within 24hr after emergence, respectively. The ratios of the mean frequencies of male to female in the same age were 0.99 : 1 to 1.15 : 1 in S. bidentatum and 1.09 : 1 in S. iwatense.

The fauna and distribution of the blackflies in Aomori Prefecture were studied based on the collections of larvae and pupae from streams and adults flying around the collectors at 98 localities in summer of 1991. A total of 12,257 blackflies, 10,956 larvae (89.4% in total number), 1,290 pupae (10.5%) and 11 adults (0.1%), were collected at 83 sites. All these blackflies were classified into sixteen species of the genus Simulium Latreille. Four species, Simulium (Nevermannia) mie, S. (Gomphostilbia) ogatai, S. (Gom.) shogakii and S. (Simulium) kawamurae, were newly recorded from Aomori Prefecture. The most abundant species was S. (N.) uchidai (27.1% in total number), followed by S. (S.) japonicum (22.4%), S. (S.) suzukii (16.4%) and S. (Odagmia) aokii (15.2%). The most widely distributed species was S. (N.) uchidai (59 sites), followed by S. (S.) japonicum (49 sites), S. (O.) aokii (48 sites), S. (S.) suzukii (38 sites) and S. sp H. (36 sites).

Survey of Anopheles minimus in Miyako Is. was carried out in 1991 and 1995 to determine its abundance and distribution. An. minimus immatures were collected in only 5 of the 22 sites surveyed in 1991 and 5 of 17 sites in 1995. The relative abundance was low, being 0.04-0.14 individual per dipper in 1991 and 0.2-1.1 individual per dipper in 1995.

Persistence of permethrin incorporated in polyethylene net during manufacture of thread was examined after practical use. Regeneration process of efficacy of the used net against Aedes aegypti was also studied. When the net was hung down at openings of houses to control dengue vector mosquitoes in Vietnam, permethrin remained 79% and 58% of the initial content in the nets used inside and outside a house after 7 months, respectively. When an unused net was washed with acetone to remove the active ingredient from the surface of thread, diffusion of the active ingredient from the inside of thread to the surface was accelerated by keeping the net at 60 to 70℃.

The host attachment and host-seeking activities of unfed Ixodes nipponensis adults were examined when they were exposed to a long day photoperiod (16L-8D) during the stages from engorged nymph to unfed adult. The percentage of host attachment of unfed females was very low (4.6-6.7%) at the ages of 1-3 months after molting, but high (48.4%) at that of 5-6 months. The host-seeking behavior of unfed adults was scarcely found for about 4 months after molting. These results suggest that unfed I. nipponensis adults molted from the nymphs exposed to a long-day photoperiod enter diapause and their host-seeking activities are low for about 4 months after molting. This diapause seems to explain the disappearance of I. nipponensis adults in early autumn (September).
