A new species, Uranotaenia (Pseudoficalbia) tanakai is described from Ôtomi, Iriomote Is., Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. The adults, pupa and 4th-instar larva are described in detail and illustrations of male genitalia, pupa and 4th-instar larva are provided. Keys to adults and larvae of nine species of the genus Uranotaenia that occur in the Archipelago are also provided.

The distributions and abundance of mosquitoes were examined in 2012 in rice-field areas in north-eastern Japan where the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 destroyed man-made as well as natural environments completely. Three study sites were selected for the mosquito study; southern Miyagi Prefecture, and northern and southern Fukushima Prefecture. Monthly mosquito collections were conducted by CO₂ traps and the density was compared between the “Tsunami” area and “No tsunami” area. A total of 8,079 adults of 12 species in 7 genera were collected and Culex pipiens group, Cx. inatomii, and Aedes albopictus were dominant. The difference in adult density between the Tsunami area and No tsunami area was still significant for the dominant mosquitoes in 2012, the 2nd year after the tsunami disaster. The adult density in 2012 was significantly lower than that in the previous year; however, Cx. pipiens group and Cx. inatomii reached a high density of 100 and 30 females per trap per day, respectively, in July or August 2012, indicating that the outbreaks of these mosquitoes occurred again in tsunami areas in 2012. Mosquito larvae were found in 22 to 57% of water bodies examined in the tsunami area.

There are few reports of caddisfly fauna in Kamikochi because the location is a special protection zone in the national park. The objective of this study is to clarify the species composition of adult caddisflies by a light trap in Kamikochi. In addition, previous records are reviewed in accordance with the objective of this study. The abundance of adult caddisflies was monitored using a light trap late in May of 2010, late July and September in 2011, and mid-May in 2012. We collected 97 adults representing 20 species of caddisflies in the Myojin area of Kamikochi during the investigation periods. Asynarchus sachalinensis Martynov was the dominant species (21.6%), followed by Neophylax japonicus Schmid (20.6%) and Lepidostoma crassicorne (Ulmer) (11.3%). The present study collected 15 species of caddisflies newly recorded from Kamikochi.

During a mosquito collection, three individuals of the adult female Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae) were collected by suction traps with dry ices in Toyama and Himi cities, Toyama Prefecture, Honshu, Japan. The ticks seem to be attracted to CO₂ administered by traps.

One gynandromorph of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) was found in Japan. This individual has 2 female antennae, the palpups of the left side is male type and palpus of right side is female. The genitalia are male type. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a gynandromorph of Aedes albopictus from Japan.
