The phenomenon of adhesive to the tip of counter electrode by multiple discharges, the method for removing the adhesives, and the analytical effect by removing them were investigated in detail, in the optical emission spectrochemical analysis of steel samples under the vacuum. The adhesive by discharge was found to be mainly α-Fe, removed in HCl (1+1) at the temperature of 50 to 60°C for about 10 min. Analytical repeatability and accuracy in the discharge with the washed counter electrode are superior to the case of discharge with the electrode just after shaping its tip.
