A new fluorometer using white light excitation and multichannel detection technique has been developed for real-time characterization of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) eluate. A xenon lamp is used as an excitation source without any wavelength selectors. Fluorescence spectra are detected by a polychromator equipped with a linear photodiode array as overlying a scattering spectrum, which is measured prior to the sample injection and subtracted in a computer. A minimum detection limit of 4 μg/
l has been obtained for Eosin in methanol, and a linear dynamic range of 10
3 has been observed. A fluorescence spectro-chromatogram of a mixture sample is demonstrated.
