In order to clarify the roles of the leader and the system of organized farm-inn district, we divided the whole process (from 1996 to 2017) of the organized farm-inn district into three periods: the starting period, the forming period and the developing period. Based on intensive interviews and participant observation, we found that the roles of the leader were quite important in both the starting period and the forming period. On the other hand, establishing the system of organized farm-inn district become important in the forming period and developing period. In the future, the succession of the role of the leader becomes a most serious problem for this district.

In Kyoto Prefecture, the number of rural-inns and inbound tourists has rapidly increased. We conducted a questionnaire survey targeting all rural-inns in Kyoto Prefecture, and analyzed factors for increasing number of foreign guests and for owners’ motivation. The results of the analysis indicated that attractiveness of exterior of the rural-inn buildings and voluntary information dissemination from rural-inns affected the increase in the number of foreign guests. Besides, owners could have improved motivation by easing the anxiety about foreigner and by raising expectation of income, and more opportunities to have foreign guests is considered effective.

In recent years, it has become more convenient for disadvantageous rural areas to disseminate regional information, such as images featuring beautiful landscapes, through new communication media like social media. However, if the impressions of the landscapes differ between local residents and nonresidents, the locality's beauty is not conveyed effectively. In this study, we focused on the differences of impressions and awareness of rural landscapes between local residents and nonresidents through comparative analysis using questionnaire. Results show that there are significant differences in impressions and awareness between local residents and nonresidents. We suggest that wide angle images taken from high vantage points, historical sites and other areas which are sometimes considered unattractive by locals are effective to attract outside visitors.

It has become clear that the importance of the areas for commutation has increased since 1990, and, compared with the commuters’flows, the house movers’ flows do not have a common trend. Under the condition that the number of commuters does not increase, the quality improvement of the pre-constructed roads in the area is important.

We suggest the indicator of “Compact Village Potential”, to choose Compact Villages objectively, considering Hard (daily facilities, roads, etc.) and Soft (social capital) factors. Then we present a case study in Chugoku Shikoku District. From our analyses, we showed that choosing Compact Villages from only Hard viewpoint may arise areas far from Compact Villages. However, from Soft viewpoint, there are villages without Hard but with Soft enough, as “Compact-Compact Villages”, different from the Compact Villages having Hard enough. To cover wide rural areas, a combination of such Villages will be necessary.

Japanese irrigation systems should be reformed along agricultural transition and rural structural change. An application of the service science framework to irrigation management could be considered. From this perspective, we would examine the 2nd Phase Project in Aichi-Irrigation Project, where irrigation canals were renovated for introducing on-demand water management. Our testable hypothesis is that water-intake stabilization effect could be proved by the increase in water-intake volume per area after the Project. Results of DID estimation are consistent with the hypothesis. Thus, we conclude that Aichi-Irrigation’s 2nd Phase Project improved the irrigation services to rise farmers’ satisfaction through the stabilization of water.

The purpose of our paper are as follows: 1) to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for using liquid fertilizer using the contingent valuation method (CVM), and 2) to simulate the management balance of methane fermentation facilities with producers selling liquid fertilizer to consumers at an appropriate price. Our results indicated that the mean WTP for using liquid fertilizer is 1,032 yen per ton and the median WTP is 681 yen per ton. After adopting the mean WTP as the appropriate price for liquid fertilizer, we simulated three scenarios of the management balance of a methane fermentation facility. We found that selling liquid fertilizer at an appropriate price supported the calculations in our study will improve the management balance by a maximum of 17 %, as compared with the current situation of methane fermentation facilities. Based on our results, we conclude that using liquid fertilizer may help the management balance of the facilities under the appropriate conditions. To do so, communicating accurate information regarding liquid fertilizer to consumers is an important factor in order to improve the management balance.

Ensuring appropriate countermeasures is difficult without sufficient data. So, we examined a new method for measuring agricultural damage caused by wildlife. We surveyed the extent of damage by using a questionnaire. We then converted the extent of damage to the farm area into equivalent amounts of money for each village, by using a standard production model.

The study examines three aspects, 1) cooperation among neighboring communities, 2) home-coming of younger generations and return migration, and 3) inclusion of children as performers, in relation with age distributions, showing both quantitative and qualitative survey results. The results indicate that the succession is currently supported by new types of participants, and that the traditional cultural events provide opportunities for ex-villagers to be back to their hometown, suggesting a new form of succession of traditional cultures of depopulating rural areas.
