This study examines the benefits of green space amenities using choice experiments. Green spaces of Negishi Forest Park were classified into lawns, forests for recreation, and forests for wildlife conservation. These attributes were presented to respondents with graphical and text information. The attributes of a local green space conservation tax and a percentage of native trees within the forest area were presented with text information. In comparison with conditional logit estimates, both use and nonuse natures of green spaces were reflected more precisely on the parameter estimates of three latent segments. It was demonstrated that the latent class logit model could reveal the taste variation of respondents in their park use.

This paper looks at how rural families share the responsibilities of child rearing and how these families are supported by local communities. The present ways of sharing housework, child rearing and farming duties were defined. In everyday life, rural women currently undertake a great variety of duties and roles, and especially desire the ability to balance time for work and time for their children. As a result, men are expected to increase their level of family involvement to assist with both housework and child care. In addition, women require further support from the local community for both child rearing and their farming.

We figured out the conditions of securing economic and social functions in agricultural community in which inhabitants of farmers are relatively old, depending on aging of labors, ratio of the labor of agriculture to that of non-agriculture, scale of arable land, and locational conditions of the community. From the viewpoint of active usage of arable land, the community consists of farmers specialized in agricultural management and has a large-scale arable land as it takes advantage of the suitability of farm products for its geographical conditions. From the viewpoint of preservation of arable land, the community should be planned with taking the diversity of the organization and the number of farmers into consideration especially in hilly and mountainous area.

The purpose of this research is to reveal the effects of values for irrigation pond on the resident's environment-conscious attitude and behavioral intention. A social psychology model was used to analyze the questionnaire data to quantify relationship among values, attitude and behavioral intention. The results indicated that (1) both agricultural and environmental values are greatly related to behavior for environmental conservation, (2) the agricultural value is directly related to the behavioral intention, and,(3) the environmental values is not only directly but indirectly related to the behavior. Our study suggested that instead of the agricultural values the environmental values can increase the behavior for conservation of irrigation pond as natural resources.

Two biomass utilization scenarios in a suburban agricultural area were evaluated from the points of energy, profitability and greenhouse gas emission. One scenario was energy crop cultivation for ethanol production at idle paddy field which was compared to preservation of the field. The other was methane fermentation to generate electricity and liquid fertilizer which was compared to composting of livestock manure. The biomass use system was divided into stages of production, transportation, conversion and utilization of energy and materials originated from biomass. This evaluation methodology could clarify the effects of the scenarios and remarks.

We investigated the actual management conditions of kleingartens by the organizations in the rural areas of Kamiya, Fudouson, and Umenosato. Following are the conclusions of this investigation: 1) In each case, a run-up of several years was necessary to establish an organization for kleingarten management. 2) The main expenses such as the running cost of facilities and the labor cost for the manager were covered mainly by the consignment fee from the municipal administration. 3) A way of increasing the incomes of the organization members is to create income sources other than the consignment fee, such as farmers market and agricultural experience.

Cultural landscape planning of terraced paddy fields requires dynamic conservation. In this approach, alteration of field plot shape is permitted, allowing cultivation to continue; a dynamic approach stands in contrast to preservation, which is commonly applied to cultural heritages. We developed a cultural landscape conservation plan for the Obasute terraced paddy field in Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture incorporating the following: I) field plots shapes of Obasute were classified into four zones with different historical characteristics corresponding to the following cultivation-technology stages, (1) the modern stage, (2) the mechanization stage, (3) contemporary farmland-consolidation stage and (4) stage of cultivation by non-farmers; II) these four zones have value as industrial heritages of agricultural-engineering, and we term them “dynamic industrial heritages”; and III) the Obasute field, which commands a panoramic view of these zones, and is recognized as a rare cultural landscape.

Paddy fields used for carrying out environmental education activities for children (PCEEAs) are mostly managed without the use of insecticides and fertilizers. In order to clarify whether PCEEAs are the source of rice pests, we studied the occurrence of rice pests in PCEEAs. The populations of leafhoppers and planthoppers in PCEEAs were equal to those in conventional paddy fields, or were lesser than those in conventional paddy fields. The population of spiders, which are natural enemies of rice pests, in PCEEAs was equal to that in conventional paddy fields. In this study, we think that the populations of leafhoppers and planthoppers are smaller in PCEEAs because of the light color of the rice leaves in PCEEAs. We think that few rice bugs migrate from PCEEAs to conventional paddy fields, since the ear emergence time in PCEEAs is later than that in conventional paddy fields.

In order to clarify the effect of vegetation on ridges and ridge-mowing techniques on the population density of wolf spiders, we investigated the seasonal changes in the population density of wolf spiders in rice paddy fields and in the ridges between these fields. A greater number of wolf spiders were detected in the ridges on which the Gramineae
Imperata cylindrical and
Echinochloa crus-galli grew than in the ridges on which the Cyperaceae
Fimbrisytlis miliacea and F. dichotoma grew. The number of wolf spiders hardly changed from August to September in the field where the ridges were not mowed. In contrast, the number of wolf spiders increased considerably after the ridges were mowed, and these spiders were observed under the cut plants in the ridges. However, the number of wolf spiders did not increase when the ridges were mowed at a height of 20 cm from the ground.

With improvement of these indexes, villages which are considered to have promoted chase-off of monkeys made by collaboration of the village succeeded in mitigating damage to crops.
Also, it was indicated that villages which succeeded in mitigating damage to crops by progress of “chase-off of monkeys by collaboration of the whole village” succeed in enhancing their consciousness for countermeasures against animal damage.

In the rice terrace area of Kamiseya on the Tango Peninsula, the traditional landscape has become dotted with abandoned paddies. Factors that played a role either in the continuation of cultivation or in the abandonment of paddies were investigated with the aim to identify factors favorable to continued use. The study showed that location, easy access and a good link to the irrigation system were favorable factors for continued cultivation. The conservation of the terraces should go hand in hand with improvement of paddy management conditions such as the creation of clusters of paddies with good links to units of the irrigation system.

Satoyama landscape in the Kaseyama District of Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture since 1880s. The results showed that change was irrelevant in areas with rice fields or common forests, but that important changes had taken place in parts of the
Satoyama landscape where crops, firewood, pottery and other goods for commercial use in nearby cities were produced. It was evident that rather than being defined by the existence of rice fields or secondary forests, the distinctive Kaseyama
Satoyama landscape had in each period and throughout changes in society been a reflection of the process of active use of local resources for daily use or for commercial purposes.

A questionnaire survey for residents of the case study area was conducted to clarity statistical relations between managerial experiences of community organizations and individual attitudes toward community revitalization. The result of statistical analyses was then followed up by the semi-structures interview survey to all the heads of local communities. Our results suggested that 1) the managerial experiences of community organizations nurture individual attitudes of mutual help, 2) which then enhance his/her attitudes toward community revitalization regardless of his or her age. Individual affects resulted from the managerial experiences were 3 folds: positive influences, negative influences and evaluation of community norms. Based upon these results, we finally summarized a causal model of how individual attitudes toward community revitalization were formed through the managerial experiences of community organizations.
