In order to grasp Influence to the vegetation of the Terraced Paddy Field Embankment by the management in which is an ownership program, vegetation investigation was performed in Oyama Senmaida. It found that the species diversity of the vegetation on the Terraced Paddy Field Embankment is preserved in the owner system enforcement ground. About the species composition, there was no influence of the management in which is an ownership program not much. However, in the owner system enforcement ground, the rate of naturalized plants was high a little, and became a subject in preservation of indigenous plant species.

This study clarified the relationships between appearance patterns of fishes and environmental factors in the main drainage canal in Isawa Town, Iwate Prefecture. Appearance patterns of fishes were most diverse in the environments with high openwork gravel rate and deeper water. It was because of an indispensable condition for fishes of which habitat in the space between gravel and fishes of which habitat was deeper water like pool. We discussed it was important to maintain the environmental factors such as the openwork gravel and pools to secure fish diversity.

Thus we examined how to put this issue under control by the case study that we conducted in Pennsylvania where sport hunting was implemented for managing deer population. We analyzed our survey data for deer hunters there. The results of this study provide a useful perspective for tackling the same problems happening in rural Japan.

This paper focuses on the process for distribution of irrigation water in one of the Land Improvement Districts (LIDs) in Kagawa district of Japan, Marugameiino LID, in the dry period of 1994. Though Japanese LIDs can be regarded as successful cases of Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM), there are several specific conditions to make LIDs' self-governing management work in practice. In the case of Marugameiino LID, there are two ways to explain the efficient distribution process ; one is the result of the Common Pool Resources (CPRs) management for a small community, the other is part of a larger modern water-supply system. Too much emphasis on the former might be inappropriate for defining the role of Water User's Association (WUA) and Water User's Group (WUG) in developing countries.

Water resources of Turphan compose of the snow and glacier from the Tenshang mountains. Peoples in Turphan continue the consolidated agriculture since old times depend on traditional channels and Karez. Recent years, arable land increased with population and demand of the irrigated water increased abruptly for assurance of productivity.
Traditional systems of irrigation could not supply the essential water to extended arable land, because dams and wells constructed for irrigation. Construction of large scaled reservoirs, canals and wells conducted of enlargement of the irrigated area and increasing of the agricultural products. But, the excessive irrigation caused to increase of the evapotranspiration and salinization. The conditions like this, the extensive arable land progressed to the desertification and abandoned. And the traditional systems of irrigation, Karez declined by interference many facilities of irrigation each other.
The potentiality of water resources development is comparatively small, judging from the present condition of water use in Turphan. Because, the developed water resources must be utilized effectively and must be take measures to save irrigation strongly. And the management of irrigation systems must be intensify, the new technology of irrigation must be popularize and the efforts of saving water must be make for irrigation system.

The process of developed classification methods is as follows : 1) the ecological function values of each village is calculated using the geographical grid database (100m×100m). 2) the devastation of the agricultural lands of each village is predicted based on questionnaire survey of fanners. 3) the classification of each village is made according to the results of above-mentioned two factors. Nitrogen flows into the oxbow lake was simulated. The following results were obtained. Inflow of water during irrigation period account for 80% of total amount, but inflow of nitrogen load account for only 30% of annual loading, And 50% of the total amount of nitrogen load flows into the lake during snow melting period. In addition, it's expected that landuse exchange from paddy field to upland field causes eutrophication of the oxbow lake.

Factor analysis was used to analyze the data from a psychological experiment. The results show that terraced rice fields landscapes are valued according to three factors, “coherence”, “natural”, and “complexity”. The physical features that were related to the perception were the coefficient of variation of all visible rice field lots in an area and the ratio of levee lengths to circumference in an image.

This paper introduces cultural landscape as a key concept, which has been introduced by the World Heritage Committee, and has been seen as one kind of regional developing tool. First, we give a summary account of cultural landscape, and then examine the relationship between cultural landscape and regional resources. It is necessary toward recycling based society that resource consumption is fulfilled by utilizing regional biomass as much as possible. In this study, the two phase of regional biomass utilization levels are assumed; 1) allowing the biomass input and accepts it as a driving force for the realization of the recycling based society, 2) allowing the maximum biomass production from the farmland within the region. Effect of cascade utilization of waste biomass was demonstrated (phase 1) and limitation of self-sufficiency by maximum biomass production was showed (phase 2). However cascade utilization can bring this limit higher, so the hypothesis “recycling based society will be realized with foundation of cascade utilization of maximum biomass” was brought out.

The purpose of this study is to make clear the characteristics of the land-use distribution and farmland diversions in urban fringes extensively. We selected Osaka prefecture as a study area and made digital maps of the four types of land-use master plans, urbanization promotion areas, urbanization control areas, agriculture promotion areas and agricultural land zones, with grid data having a 10-m resolution to match the coordinate system of the land-use grid data. The land-use distribution and farmland diversions in “white zones” in agriculture promotion areas of urban fringes were analyzed spatially for the periods of 1979-85, 1985-91 and 1991-96. The result shows that farmland diversions tend to be influenced by the change of economic conditions. In the 1980's, developments for developing lands and residential were outstanding and even encroached deeply in white zones. Although this trend slowed down in the early 1990's, the disordered land-use distribution remained in white zones of urban fringes.
