Water quality and fluctiation pattern in water level of 38 small irrigation ponds were investigated in Hokudan- cho, Hyogo Prefecture, West Japan. Temperature, water temperature, pH, electric conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), N0

4+, SiO
2, PO
43-, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and water level were surveyed in each pond from May 2002 to April 2003. The result showed that there was not so much difference in water condition of among ponds, because water is frequently pumped from a pond to another pond. The existence of water plants and polluted water from residences influenced water condition. The water level of most irrigation ponds fluctuated dramatically from spring to the end of summer.

We discussed about habitation of the pond frog Rana porosa porosa, and correspondence of the structure of a ditch in the side of a paddy field in the Isawa alluvial fan. As the result of count census on a levee, the density of this frog was high in ditches of a ground material, and remarkably low in ditches of the concrete material. And density of this frog was the highest in the ditch, which had the moderate biomass of grass on a levee. It was guessed that two points had operated to plus on an abundance of this frog. The points were that there are a great many ditch of ground material, and the |and consolidation paddy field of old time is maintained in this area.

This study aimed to clarify that status of spot billed duck damage to direct seeding in submerged paddy field in the Tohoku District by questionnaire survey to farmer. As a results, damage by Spot billed duck tended to grow, as it was frequently seen around the paddy field. However, It was clarified that the population of the Spot billed duck and its damage situations were different according to the region. Therefore, It is hoped to understand the damage situations by Spot billed duck in each region, and to introduce the direct seeding in submerged paddy field that suits those situations.

The following results were derived from this study. Firstly, eight VOCs in rural sewage treatment plant were found. Two VOCs, dibromochloromethane and bromoform among them, which are main components of trihalomethane, fluctuated in same way with time and showed the good co-relation. Secondly, chloroform showed higher value shortly after inputting chlorine to disinfect Escherichia coli and smaller value with time. Finally, rural sewage treatment plant could remove six VOCs except chloroform and toluene. Especially dibromochloromethane and bromoform were almost removed.

Local towns are facing a serious loss of the younger generation. In this study, we thought that high school students represented for younger generation. To know their sense for residence, a questionnaire was carried out at a high school in Fuji area, Shizuoka pref. and was analyzed using multinomial logit models in order to clarify the factors affecting their choice on place of living, particularly the conditions for which they would return to their hometown. Samples were grouped into two types, namely nature-oriented and urban-oriented, which showed different preferences for their living and working environments. This result revealed that the students are not only seeking for urban attractiveness but also appreciating a rich natural environment of their region.

This study was performed to clarify measures against population migration from rural districts. The net migration rate in young males in 44 municipalities in Kyoto prefecture was calculated. The following conclusions were reached. (1) We should consider population migration of males aged 15-19 years during a 5-year period, separately from that of males aged 20-24 years during 5-year period. (2) If new employment opportunities are created as a measure against population migration, more marked effects may be obtained in the 3rd industry than in the 2nd industry.

The travel cost method is a commonly used method of valuing recreational sites. Although mail surveys are often conducted to collect data on the costs of travel to the amenity, they usually result in a lower response rate than that of face-to-face interview surveys. As a result, several biases such as non-response bias and sample selection bias will occur. The benefit derived from the consumption of environmental services can be over-/under estimated. We examined whether the rate of non-response varies as the distance from the study site increases, based on the data collected from recent visitors of Ohigawa River, Shizuoka-city. We can conclude that, contrary to our expectation, there is no statistically significant correlation between the non-response rate and distance within 150km of the site.

This paper clarified and predicted the degree of negative externality on farmers caused by non-farm land use around farm field. We took two types of non-farmland land uses; abandoned farmland and build-up land. First, we clarified how much externality was occurring by questionnaire and interview survey. The result showed that disease and insect control nearby abandoned farmlands were serious problem both on the paddy and upland field. Solar problem and damages from wildlife were recognized serious problems by upland farmers. Second, we estimated the extent of non-farm land use at which most farmers would feel externality by logistic regression model. The result had significance about most variables.

Experimental analyses of real social phenomena have been difficult because of physical and ethical limitations. In this research, we developed a model that predicts process of change in agricultural structure by Community-based Agricultural Land Lease model (CALL model) applying Multi-Agent Systems (MAS). The CALL model is a simulation model based on artificial society in computer. The CALL model is expected to be a new approach to overcome these difficulties. Though the model should be further improved, it would be able to provide crucial information for local agricultural planning.

Although it is important to grasp the characteristics of macroscopic land-use changes, only few attempts have so far been made in regional planning. The purpose of this paper is to develop a land-use model over Japan. We employ Geographically Weighted Regression using Greater Municipal Regions (GMR) as data units. GMR is a cluster of municipalities consisting of central cities and surrounding rural villages and is considered to have a suitable spatial scale for regional planning. The results show that factors prescribing agricultural lands exhibit a high degree of variability over space and make clear the spatial characteristics of GMRs.

Land resources in the floodplain of the Upper Zambezi River in Western Province, Zambia were assessed using satellite imageries and field observations. The vast Barotse Plain measuring 48 x 165 km at its maximum width/length is formed through seasonal iterations of flooding from the Zambezi. Various phases of micro topography found in the center of the plain provide different types of land usage by the Lozi, who practice seasonal grazing, farming and migration in a unique manner. Image analysis revealed that a great portion of the plain is flooded following the rainy season, remaining very limited land available for farming and living.

As the result, it became clear that the probability of the residential land envelopment could estimate by the high level of the goodness of fit. It also became clear that in addition to the important factor of the land use change like geographical features, geological features, and the population distribution, the initial land use condition plays very important role. Moreover it also became clear that to estimate the probability of the residential land development only by initial land use condition is possible at a considerable level.

The weak commitment of participants was brought by the incomplete consensus on the execution of participatory planning in local community, and it made expected function of planning organization work partially especially in information exchange between habitants and their representatives. The underlying cause of these two problems is easygoing belief that functions of local community are applicable in the planning process. This study focuses in long-range trend of personal trip in Okayama prefecture that was surveyed from 1979 to 2000. It is clarified that the hierarchy of the destination has completely changed. Mode shift of residents to automobiles performs very important role to accelerate this trend. Especially, centripetal force of agricultural local center, such as Tsuyama city has declined during these 20 years. Moreover, residents in agricultural districts have changed to prefer inexpensive and plentiful stores to conventional personal service, like residents in urban area.
