In this study, the fatigue strengths of tha shaft with key way and fillet of Cr-Mo steels as SCM440 were investigated. The rotary bending fatigue tests and the original torsional fatigue tasts in SCM440 were carried out. The shaft with key and fillet was modeled and analyzed by using Finite element methods. The cause of fatigue fracture of the shaft was predicted that the stress concentration of the shaft and impact loading at using. Finally, the method of the relaxation of the stress on the shaft could be proposed.

In our laboratory, manufacture and flight tasts of PET bottle rocket in the first semester of 2nd grade have been carrying out as introductive education of fluid engineering. The objective of this paper is to investigate a stall phenomenon arising in the PET bottle rocket at the optimum launching angle, which is calculated computationally. The separated vortex patterns over the PET bottle rocket at the attack incidence range 45 to 70 deg have been visuallized by hydrogen bubble method and tungsten halogen lamp in the improved water channel experiment. Reynolds number in the visualization experiments is 4.7 × 1,000 referred to the base diameter. It was confirmed that the uniformity of velocity profile at the test section of the water channel was better than ±20% over the whole main flow velocity range measured. It was found that the separated vortices become asymmetric with an increase in angle of incidence, and the vortex shedding such as karman vortex street performs at attack angle larger than about 65 deg.

In recent years, river has been built in consideration of environment or the scenery. This research inserts deflector in a curved river, and changes the direction of the streamline through a curve and thereby, the influence of the flow by curve is eased. When inserting deflector in a curved river, length is 40% of river width, and if an insertion position is insertion in 63% at the back of a curve, it is effective in direction change of a streamline. Moreover, if deflector is inserted by plurality rather than the singular, a direction change of a streamline will be obtained a big effect. However, it becomes the cause that makes the streamline of a down-stream produce disorder, and has left some problems. This research experiments by changing the curvature of a curve, and reports the result examined about the validity of the deflector by change of curvature.

Anaerobic digestion of Japanese standard kitchen garbage was conducted in conventional CSTRs under both mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The lab-scale reactors were fed with kitchen garbage containing 10%-TS at a HRT of 30 days (3.0-3.5 g-TS 1-1 d-1 of volumetric loading rate). Both mesophilic and thermophilic reactors exhibited process failure due to severe acidification. A restoration of methane yield based on the VS of the garbage added was observed after the addition of minerals (Ni, Co, and Fe) in the mesophilic but not in the thermophilic, suggesting that the requirement for minerals is higher in thermophilic anaerobic digestion than in mesophilic digestion. Among those minerals, it is suggested that Ni is the most important for anaerobic digestion of japanese standard kitchen garbage.

An Imaging Spectrogram Analysis (ISA) system for fluorescence distributions in plant leaves was devised. The ISA system was composed of a microscope, an imaging spectrograph, a chilled-CCD camera, and image analysis devices. Image processing on a personal computer was carried out by software we developed with Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. The spectral axis and the spatial axis in the system were corrected by measuring the spectrum of a standard light source and by measuring the reflected light from a standard ruler graduated on a slide glass in 10 μm, respectively. Then, transverse distributions of UV laser induced fluorescence in Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) leaves were measured. The fluorescence spectra on any line in a section of a leaf were examined in detail. It is thought that this device is useful to examine the growth conditions of various plants.

A Contact clause is one of the grammatical items popular among the learners of English language in Japan, even in the junior and senior high schools. The item is taken up as one of the grammatical teaching items at schools in the course of study published by the ministry of education. The 1st year students of Kisarazu national college of technology (KNCT in short) were examined from the point how much they have acquired the item with some kinds of tests. The result was compared with that of the upper class students and the achievement of sentence structures among eight college students in Kanto District. In KNCT, the contact clause acquisition increase with the rise of grade. About 20% of the 1st year students understand what the contact clauses are. For them six sentence elements (sentential subject, noun complement, relative clause, embedded question, grammatical wh-question, and two wh-questions) were precisely examined from the point of correctness and incorrectness.

This paper examines the real and virtue figures of the modern city as written from the viewpoint of the shadows of the city. This study examines this theme as evidenced in various literary works, in particular that written by Chamisso as well as others. Such a theme in literature became prominent from the 19th Century as the urban "city" emerged as a gathering place for the masses. The first urban "city" is recognized to be Paris, and it is noted that those living in the city possessed both "front" and "back" faces. This characteristic of the population caused a differentiation between the urban city environment and the rural countryside. The literature that emerged depicting this societal transition in the 19th Century illustrated a difference between the self and the shadow, where the shadow possessed no will in its existence but existed in subjugated relationship with the self. Without the existence of the self, the shadow could not exist. This idea shifted in the 20th Century, and the self and the shadow became separate entities or ideas where no subjugation of the shadow existed. It is highly possible than in the future, the relationship between the shadow and the self will further develop where the self is lost within the virtual shadow of the post-modern city.

The purposes of this study were to develop web-based teaching materials for teaching vocabulary to college students and to measure the effect of them. The developed web-based teaching materials consisted of six steps which were arranged to learn vocabularies effectively. After teaching the target vocabularies to the subjects with the materials for three months, it was clear that the web-based teaching materials developed in this study was effective to foster learners' ability to memorize the spellings of English words and to understand the meanings of the phrases in which the target words were used. We were not certain, however, whether the teaching materials could foster learners' ability to acquire the meanings of individual English words.
