    A new efficient method of determining the amount of image change from a given pair of images using one dimensional section matching is presented. It is assumed that there are two long line segments with different orientations (characteristic lines) in these images. The image change parameters (the amount of translation ΔX and ΔY and the amount of rotation ψ) are calculated from the displacement vector of the intersection point of the two characteristic lines. The positions of the characteristic lines are determined using one dimensional image section matching. The intensity patterns of the two given images at a corresponding section are compaired and the characteristic line position is determined as the least sum-squared error point. The proposed algorithm includes only four one dimensional matching steps and is adequate for real time purpose. Experimental results are also presented (outdoor scene and laboratory scene), compairing with the results obtained by the point matching method (by identifying 5 corresponding point pairs in the two images and by solving a set of linear equations).

    Although we reported some methods for measuring the glossiness of spherical specimens, they had such a problem that the glossiness-errors were easily caused by the deviation of the specimen from normal holding position. In order to reduce the glossiness-errors, the following technique was attempted in this paper. The intensity-distribution of the light reflected from the specimen is measured by the CCD line-sensor and the acquired distribution data are filtered with a spacial weighting function resembling the human visual function, using a personal-computer. From the computed results, a new glossiness was defined for spherical spesimen. As the results, comparing to 30% errors in the old glossiness, we could reduce the errors to less then 12% in the new glossiness for about 1mm deviation of the specimen with a 8mm diameter.

    In the shape identification of the three dimensional object using a vision sensor, a system unaffected by the translation and the rotation of the object is required. The authors have developed a system for quickly identifying the shape of a 3-D object, using space encoding and a pattern transformation of image data. In this system, a dot-matrix-like pattern of bright spots is projected onto the object area, utilizing the optical diffraction effect produced by a fiber grating (FG) device. A spot projection pattern, which is obtained by the vision sensor, is transformed into a pattern of invariance to the translation of the object. The system is insensitive to the translation and the rotation of the object by training a multilayered neural network, using the transformed pattern.
    This paper describes the method of shape identification of the 3-D object, using the FG vision sensor, and the configuration of the system. The results of the experiments, which were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. are discussed.

    A stereoscopic display and dissection method of brain tissue is developed for the easy understanding of its anatomical domains with their relative positions and dissection surfaces. A set of transverse section frame lines obtained from photos of rat brain slices is composed into a three dimensional image. It is viewed as a three dimensional image by adopting stereoscopic view method for giving a depth of synthesized image of rat brain, making out two different images taking into account a human binocular parallax. A dissection part is given in a plane and by polygon using a mouse device and displayed stereoscopically. Furthermore, using a operational knife graphically synthesized with three dimensional position given by a mouse device, a dissection part is obtained with its stereoscopic view making clear a trace of its blade of a simulated knife.

    A 3-D vision sensor and an algorithm for inspecting the dimensions of cylindrical bosses and holes of automotive parts have been developed. The algorithm measures the dimensions of the featured points of the bosses and the holes instead of their overall dimensions. The cross slit lights of the 3-D vision sensor are projected onto the bosses and the holes. The featured points are detected from the shapes of the reflected slit lights. From the 3-D coordinates of the featured points, the diameters and centers of the circles inscribed in the bosses and the holes. From these values, inclination, size and asymmetry of the bosses and the holes are obtained.
    In the experiments, the accuracy of detecting the diameters and centers of the inscribed circles were ±0.30 mm. This result indicates the effectiveness of the sensor and the algorithm.

    In a scene image, moving or deleting an object makes the missing region at that location. This paper describes a novel method for mending visually inconspicuously the defect image with a missing region in the case that the background around the missing region is textural and the location of the missing region is known. The simplest solution for this problem is to insert an appropriate subimage (a patch) taken from a non-defect textural region into the missing location. In this case, however, the seam of the patch seems conspicuous because of the displacement in textural phase between the patch and the image around the patch, and because of the jump in gray level nearby the seam. In the method proposed here, first, a subimage as an optimum patch is selected from the non-defect textural region so that the displacement in textural pattern between the patch and the image around the missing region is minimum. Secondly, an appropriate seam line is computed using the dynamic programming algorithm so that the accumulation of gray level differences between the two on the seam is small. Experimental results for natural textures are shown in order to demonstrate this mending technique.

    This paper proposes a new control method of plasma position and shape for tokamak reactors employing a hybrid poloidal field coil system. The control method adopts a decoupling matrix and a hybrid control matrix. The decoupling matrix suppresses interactions among the control loops of plasma horizontal position, vertical position and shape to improve the responses of the control loops. The hybrid control matrix sets the coil current references of the hybrid poloidal field coil system, and keeps the equilibrium field of plasma in order to realize the control loops. The proposed control method was evaluated by digital simulations using a mathematical plasma model based on the equilibrium equations of plasm, and is now available to realize stable control loops of plasma position and shape for tokamak reactors.
