The first blood donation was held from November 6th to 9th in 1967.
As for the medical history special caution was paid to the Filaliosis, endemic in that island in close co-operation with the health center. The specific gravidity of the whole blood of volunteers was rather higher and the rejection rate of female donors was 21.6%. The ratio of the four ABO blood groups of the inhabitants was much the same as those of Honshu island. But the incidence of Rho negative persons seemed rather higher, indicating the still existing consanguineous marriages among them.
Also some public hygienic data were reported.

An experimental and clinical study on DI-22, a fat emulsion for intravenous use and the first such product to be developed in Japan is present. DI-22 consists of linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and linoleic acid which is made isotonic with glycerol. The size of the fat particles are 0.8-1.0 in diameter and are uniform in shape.
The fluctuation of hemoglobin and hematocrit was the same as that of Intralipid and no anemia was observed. The triglyceride curve also was the same as Intralipid with neither increase nor accumulation of the product. No remarkable changes were noted in the phospholipid values and plasma fat elimination from the blood stream was found to be very satisfactory when given at a speed of 40 drops per minute.
The side effects were very mild with nausea noted in one case, phlebitis in one case and a peculiar odor experienced in 3 cases out of the 30 cases. No sign of over-loading syndrome was observed and the liver and thrombo-test values were within normal limits. No toxity was noted.
It is concluded that DI-22 is not only safe for clinical use but is valuable for studies of metabolic changes to be made in the future.
