A new species of Ficalbia was found in the 1978 mosquito collections from Iriomote Island of Okinawa, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. The genus is the first record from Japan. Three males easily distinguished from all known species of the genus by maxillary palpus and IX tergum of genitalia are described and illustrated in detail.

A new black-fly species, Simulium (Nevermannia) uemotoi sp. nov., is described based on female, male, pupal and mature larval specimens collected from Oita, Japan. This new species is assigned to the vernum species-group and is distin-guished from other known related species by a combination of the following characters: katepisternum with several hairs on each side and 1st and 2nd segments of maxillary palp ocherous in both sexes of adults; frons with two long and one short trichomes on each side, gill with four slender thread-like filaments and simple wall-pocket-shaped cocoon in the pupa; and small, M-shaped or rounded postgenal cleft and simple rectal organ in the larva. A new name S. (TV.) onoi is given for the species which was collected from Hokkaido and erroneously identified as Cnetha konoi by Ono.

Spatial repellency of a new device in which metofluthrin, a newly synthesized pyrethroid, is impregnated into a multilayer paper strip, against Aedes albopictus was evaluated under outdoor conditions. High spatial repellency (>80%) with the metofluthrin-impregnated (200 mg) device lasted for more than 6 weeks, while the repellency with the same device impregnated with the same amount of transfluthrin declined within 5 weeks after treatment.

The pupae of Culex (Oculeomyia) bitaeniorhynchus and Cx. (Sirivanakarnius) boninensis are described and their taxonomic characters are discussed. Chaetotaxy tables and full illustrations for these two species are prepared. Oculeomyia is resurrected from synonymy with the subgenus Culex and given subgeneric status to include Culex bitaeniorhynchus and Cx. sinensis. A new subgenus Sirivanakarnius is established for Culex boninensis. A key to species of the pupa of mosquitoes from Ogasawara-gunto is presented.

Small amounts of hydramethylnon were dispersed in a test arena or inside of harborages by the German cockroaches, Blattella germanica, following their feeding on gel bait with this active ingredient. Water, cockroach carcasses and their feces were also contaminated with hydramethylnon. When fresh colonies of the German cockroaches were exposed to the contaminated arena or harborages, most died within 20 days; mortality from exposure to water, carcasses, and feces was less than in the contaminated arena or harborages. The amount of feces produced by cockroaches feeding on hydramethylnon was less than what cockroaches normally produce. Bait dyed with red color (Pamo acid pyribinium) provided evidence of cockroaches carrying small amounts of bait to the inside of harborages and the floor of the test arena. Delayed action of hydramethylnon bait against the German cockroaches might be the result of exposure to contaminated harborages or the surface of the foraging area.

Inhibitory effects of a neem formulation on emergence of two common species of mosquitoes were evaluated. When fourth-instar larvae of Ochlero-tatus japonicus and Culex pipiens pallens were exposed to 1.9 ppm and 0.6 ppm solution of azadirachtin, 99% and 75% inhibition of the adult emergence was observed, respectively. The 1.9 ppm solution showed mainly larvicidal effects on these mosquitoes, but the 0.6 ppm solution mainly inhibited the emergence.

Larvicidal effects of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.: Meliaceae) seed kernel extracts against Paratanytarsus grimmii (Schneider) (Diptera: Chironomidae) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) were examined by the immersion method. The hexane extract of neem clearly showed lethal effects against mature larvae of both species at a concentration of 1,000 ppm.
