The crystal structure of black iron oxide which was deposited on a thin filler substrate such as mica by homogeneous precipitation using an aqeous solution dissolved urea, an oxidizing agent, and ferrous salts was investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy and SEM. As a result, it was confirmed that the particle shape, the crystal structure, and the color differed with the thin filler substrate used.
Black-iron-oxide-coated mica having interference color was prepared by the coating of the fine particle of black iron oxide formed from homogeneous precipitation using an aqueous solution dissolved urea, ferric salts, and ferrous salts on a thin filler substrate.
From the relationship between the color and the crystal structure, it was confirmed that the interference color differed with the formation ratio of Fe2O3 to γ-Fe2O3 in the black iron oxide on thin-filler substrate.
From the investigation of the magnetic characteristics, it was confirmed that the black-ironoxide-coated mica can be applied as a magnetic color material.

Fine titanium dioxide was modified with dodecyl groups, and the products were characterized in various respects. 1, 3, 5, 7-Tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCTS) was deposited on fine titanium dioxide at 80°C by chemical vapor deposition, which was polymerized catalytically to form poly (methylsiloxane) (PMS) layer on the surface. Fine titanium dioxide coated with TMCTS was prepared in five varieties with different amounts of TMCTS (PMS m, m : 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40). Fine titanium dioxide modified with dodecyl groups (Dm, m : 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40) was synthesized from PMS-TiO2 by hydrosilylation with 1-dodecene. The contact angle showed a tendency to increase with increasing added TMCTS or dodecene. Furthermore, in the case of the powder-oil disperse system, the Bingham yield value increased with increasing added dodecene on the dispersed particles and the coagulation force between particles.

Porous titania hollow capsules were prepared by making organic/inorganic hybrid gel membranes first and then sintering them, and the preparation conditions and the properties of the capsules were investigated. Use of the interfacial gelling reaction of N-lauroyl-L-glutamic acid-α, γ-di-n-butylamide (LGBA), an oil gelling agent, enabled us to prepare porous titania hollow capsules. Addition of drying control chemical additive (DCCA) to water was found to effectively prevent crack formation in the products. When ethylene glycol was used as DCCA, it retarded the hydrolysis and polycondensation of the metal alkoxide in the presence of base catalyst. It was also found that the crystal-form composition of porous titania hollow capsules changes with the temperature of heat treatment, namely, anatasetype of the titania is obtained at 600°C, but its rutile-type is obtained at 1000°C.
