TiO2 thin films were prepared by deposition of TiO2 ultrafine particles made by a reversed micelle technique on quartz or ITO substrate, and the effects of film thickness.and deposited particle size on the optical properties of the films were investigated. UV-vis spectra and atomic force microscopic (AFM) observation confirmed the formation of TiO2 microcrystalline films with high optical transparency. Removal of the surfactant (Aerosil OT) molecules from the film by methanol treatment was effective to prevent the aggregation of the particles during the calcination. Photoelectrochemical measurements of these films showed that photocurrent was observed only when the film thickness was above a certain threshold value. This threshold value of the film thickness was found to depend on the deposited particle size.

In this paper, we examine the properties of two series of hole transport materials. One is FTPD, having triphenylamine and fluorene structure. The FTPDs have high glass transition temperatures above 80°C because of their rigid fluorene moiety. The ionization potentials (Ips) of the FTPDs were correlated with the Hammett constants of the substituents of the FTPDs. The driving voltages of the double layer organic light emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated with FTPDs and tris (8- quinolinolato) aluminum complex (Alq3) were affected by the Ips of the FTPDs. The other is OTPAC, which has a triphenylamine oligomeric structure that improves thermal stability further. The glass transition temperatures of the OTPACs are higher than those of the FTPDs. The driving voltages of the double layer LEDs fabricated with OTPACs and Alq3 were lower than those of the devices with FTPDs, and they have no relationship to the Ips of the OTPACs. It is likely that the morphological character of the hole transport layers mainly affects the performance of the LEDs in the case of the OTPACs.

In order to improve the weatherbility of UV curable paint without affecting the curing property, We focused more on the reaction mechanism of UV absorber and tried to design a new type UV absorber.
Hydroxyl groups of UV absorbers were blocked by xanthenecarboxyl group or o-nitorobenzyl-ether. It was shown that these blocked UV absorbers exhibited little retarding effect on the UV curing rate. These blocking groups reproduced hydroxyl group under UV irradiation and deblocked UV absorber that showed the same absorption pattern as the original UV absorber. After accelerated weathering tests, however, the yellowing of the coatings was observed due to the residue of the blocking group. A possibility for the preparation of new UV absorbers that do not affect UV curing by blocking their hydroxyl groups with blocking agents of better weatherability was shown.

Amphiphilic acrylic-polyurethane graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting a blend of vinyl monomers and acid monomers to partially vinyl - endblocked polyurethanes. Carbon black and organic pigments previously dispersed in organic solvent with the aid of dispersants or in a solid hydrophobic polymer matrix, were encapsulated by these amphiphilic graft copolymers during the emulsification process which accompanied phase inversion. The emulsification process conditions and the pigment to binder ratio were investigated. Pigment encapsulation by amphiphilic acrylic - polyurethane graft copolymers containing tertiary amine functionality in the polyurethane moiety occurred without the aid of dispersants.

A new oil-dispersible planar titania (OD-TiO) with a lateral size in the range of O. 5 to 200/1 n was synthesized by the catalytic sol-gel process in oil phase. Titanium tetraethoxide was pretreated with isostearic acid to be dispersed in oil phase before the reaction. Sodium stearate was used as a catalyst for the titania formation in oil phase. The formation reaction proceeded very slowly without any catalyst because only a little amount of water, as another reactant, was included in the oil. OD-TiO exhibited both a high transparency and a high absorbance of UVB. The sun protection facter (SPF) of the dispersion of OD-Ti0 (30 wt%) in oil was 16, in spite of the high transparency. The UV protection ability was enhanced when commercially available fine TiO2 particle was added. The safety of OD-TiO was confirmed to be at the same level of the surface-coated fine Ti02 particle by a biological test.

Fluorine-containing oligomeric surfactants, HCl salt type and free base type, were prepared by the reaction of polyethyleneimines (Mn = 300,600 and 1200) and a few kinds of perfluoro-N, N-dialkylamino-substituted perfluorocarboxylic acid fluorides. The degree of the introduction of the perfluoro-N, N-dialkylamino-groups at the imino positions was 0.4-2.2 % in all cases. In spite of the lower degree of the introduction of the perfluoroalkyl groups, these compounds exhibited good surface activities.
