The photographic properties of photopolymerizable composites initiated by a combined system of radical generator and spectral sensitizer were investigated under 630-nm-light exposure. The photopolymerizable layer consists of four components : matrix polymer, multifunctional monomer, radical generator, and squarilium dye sensitizer. The dye exhibits an absorption maximum at 633nm. Scince radical generators, such as 2,4,6-tris (trichloromethyl) -s-triazine (TCT) and organic peroxide, show sensitivity only in the ultraviolet region, they are difficult to be used as photoinitiators of red-light-sensitive imaging materials. However, the addition of a squarilium dye extended the range of spectral sensitivity toward longer wavelength. The sensitivity to 633 nm He-Ne laser of the photopolymer initiated by TCT sensitized with squarilium dye was 0.5 mJ/cm2. Moreover, the photosensitivity was increased by approximately one order of magnitude by using such matrix polymers as poly (vinylpyrrolidone). The sensitization of the radical generator by the dye involves electron transfer from the excited dye to the radical generator. A Lippmann hologram was recorded with the photopolymer initiated by the dye-sensitized system. The holographic properties were evaluated in terms of the wavelength dependence of the diffraction efficiency. The hologram exhibited high diffraction efficiency and good resistance to humidity.

A water-in-oil type emulsion was prepared from laccol from Vietnam urushi (Rhus Succedala L.), a protein hydrolyzate, and laccase derived from Myceliophthora, by three-roll mill. We were able to make the paint by enzymatic reaction of urushi which had 80% nonvolatile content and good drying character. The obtained hardened film had high gloss and good physical properties that were characteristic of three-roll mill processing.
The possibility of the usage not as alternative paints of urushi but as general-purpose paints was suggested. This paint is expected as environmentally-friendly paints from the viewpoints of not only the ordinary temperature hardening and organic solvent free but also resources crops and resources planting.
