JOURNAL FREE ACCESSMold shrinkage of the colored plastics based on polyethylene and polypropylene is a well-known phenomenon and is considered due to pigment-induced crystallization of polymers. A systematic investigation has been carried out for the clarification of a correlation between crystalline nucleation effect by organic pigments and mold shrinkage in polypropylene systems in terms of measurement of crystallization rates and microscopic observation of the crystalline state. As a result, a clear correlation is observed between them. The same correlation is also confirmed in polyethylene systems by dilatometry which enable us to evaluate the crystallization process of polymers. In addition, organic pigments are found to enhance the nucleation frequency for the crystallization of polymers rather than to raise the growth rate of nucleates.View full abstractDownload PDF (1262K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSSome kinds of organic crystalline as powder cosmetics have high performances compared with inorganic extender pigments. We investigated the relation between internal structure and properties of Na-Zn salt of monocethylphosphate (MCP-NZ) as an example of organic crystalline powder. MCP-NZ showed the performances such as the low frictional stress, high transparency, and good waterproofing. They may be correlated with the softness of the particles. The particles were deformed to be thin layer easily when applied to skin. As a result of the deformation, light scattering was decreased and the adhesiveness to the skin was increased. MCP-NZ molecules was found to form a lamellar structure in its plate crystal from XRD analysis. The deformation on application was probably caused by easy sliding between layers formed with methyl groups of the end of MCP-NZ molecules.View full abstractDownload PDF (687K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA rapid nondestructive analysis of organic and inorganic pigments in coating films was carried out by the method using Raman spectroscopy.
Infrared spectroscopy has been commonly used as one of rapid methods for the identification of coating resins and their constituents, but no appreciable attempt has been made for the identification of pigments in coating films directly. The purpose of the present paper was to compare infrared and Raman spectra of coating films, and to demonstrate the usefulness on the investigation of structural characterization of pigments in some coating systems.
Our study on the analysis of pigments in coating films with infrared and Raman spectroscopies showed a complementary nature of these techniques : Raman spectroscopy is very useful for pigment identification while infrared spectroscopy is useful for resin characterization.View full abstractDownload PDF (618K) -
