Olfaction is said to be directly related to emotions. People's prior experience and knowledge about the odor is
known to influence the odor hedonics. However, it is difficult to consider all experience-dependent factors of each person in advance.
In this study, for the purpose of estimating the emotion caused by the odors, the association between subjectively evaluated odor sensation and emotion was analyzed. Seven odor evaluation axes were extracted by principal component analysis of odor evaluation data. Linear mixed models clarified the relationships among emotions and odor evaluation scores. The odor sensations of pleasant and safe were shown to have large contribution to both relaxation and refreshing. The participants felt relaxed when they smelled woody and green aromas. The participants felt refreshed when they smelled sharp aromas and, people who supposed that the sharp aroma was more natural felt this effect more.
