After Tokachioki Earthquake occurred in 1968, experimental studies on the shear failure of reinforced concrete members subjected to lateral forces have been carried out actively by many researchers in Japan. According to these investigations, serviceable analytical results on the mechanism of shear failure of reinforced concrete members and many test data on the shear reinforcement have been accumulated. However, in respects of the amount of shear reinforcement to insure sufficient strength and high ductility that is required for reinforced concrete members, the final conclusion for appropriate evaluation has not reached so far. The purpose of this report is to describe the noticeable results of investigations on the shear reinforcement of reinforced concrete members carried out in Japan during the last decade, and also to contribute toward the rationalization of shear design method.

For determination of the fatigue strength of concrete, it is necessary to grasp adequately the influence of many factors over the concrete and the state of life distribution of fatigue. Taking up the fatigue of concrete, this paper describes the calculation of fatigue strength by the use of statistical method first and the influence of many factors, such as amount of repeated stress, static strength, rate of loading, rest period, stress gradient and other particular environmental conditions. Further, the change by repeated loading on the dynamical properties of concrete which is an approach to the mechanism of fatigue failure, the fatigue properties under varying loads and the application of the fatigue strength for practical concrete construction.
