Artificial aggregates with coal ash as the raw material available from the past have all been foamed-type and of light weight. Recently, however, a high-strength artificial coarse aggregate using coal ash as the main ingredient which, differing from foamed-type aggregate, is of oven-dry specific gravity around 2.0 through densification of aggregate texture, can achieve concrete of high strength and light weight, has been developed. The method of manufacturing this high-strength artificial aggregate, the basic properties of the aggregate and concrete using it, the characteristics of high-strength and high-fluidity concrete containing this aggregate, and its application to structural members are reported in this paper.
