This paper summarizes the previous studies on nonlinear behaviors of concrete as well as constitutive models of continuum concrete. First, volume change, elasticity, plastic deformation, damage are conceptually illustrated relating to stress-strain relationship, including the confinement effect. Next, isotropic nonlinear elasticity models, orthtropic hypoelasticity models, elasto-plastic models and plasticity-damage models are explained systematically.

Recently many types of high-performance concrete are being developed, with high strength and high fluidity by making use of various chemical agents, silica fume and so on. Many methods of mix design for these high-performance concrete have been proposed, but general principle for it are not yet established. Here, the history of the development of the theory on mix design of concrete are reviewed, expecting that it might help to find out a clue to establish such general principle.
